Quake 4 is a mixed bag, while trying to follow on from Quake 2 it makes a lot of changes that I hated at the time, and reimagines almost everything from the previous game - the vehicle sections were tedious and at times very frustrating, but the game did perk up once the (gruesome) plot twist is revealed! Not my favourite game by any means but it is one that I will play again one day for nostalgic reasons!
I bought this game hearing that it was quite similar to Bioshock, and that's not wrong, it owes a lot to that game for mechanics and gameplay, but it is different enough to be considered a good game on its own merits. I enjoyed it for the most part although it does get a bit tedious at times, and it has quite a nice twist at the end too! Worth playing if you haven't already, ESPECIALLY if you can get it cheap!
Alan Wake is an overlooked classic, similar in style to Dead Space, with a fantastic atmosphere, and clever game mechanic, and a very engaging story. One of the few games I got all achievements for on Xbox, and the PC version is even better, well worth buying, especially if you can buy it on offer! Still looks great today, and still creepy as heck! Still hold out hope for a sequel one day!
I love this game so much, and I don't even like gory games in general! Everything about it is just about perfect, from the controls and movement, to difficulty levels and variety of enemies, and especially the Ishimura - it is literally the best space ship design in video games and feels completely real and practical! The weapons give you many options to play this game the way you want, and the starting weapon is definitely not some throw away pop gun - you can complete the whole game only using it! You get some suitable abilities to help you too, like telekenisis and time manipulation (somehow, don't ask!) that add to the fun, and destroying monsters with their own projectiles NEVER gets old! This game is around 10 years old now, and still holds up fairly well today visually, in fact I am still astonished that PS3 and Xbox 360 could pull these visuals off! Gameplay is great fun, and the locations are suitably creepy and scary, and the sound design, it sounds more like a movie than a video game! This game was heavily influenced by Resident Evil 4, and having played both I can say if you like RE4 you WILL love Dead Space, and once you're done, Dead Space 2 is even better!
Like the title says, Warrior Within is the best PoP game to date for me, it still looks wonderful and is a lot of fun to play, especially the exploration, and there's a LOT to explore! Where it falls down though is style, the music is dreadful, they replaced the original actor from the first one, and it is HORRIBLY sexist, the female characters all look and act like porn stars. If you can get past (and skip) those things, it is worth playing, you don't need to have played any of the other games to follow the story either.
