Spells & Secrets

An interesting game

This is an interesting game and fun to play for short periods of time. It is a roguelike game, where you are expected to be defeated and then start a new run over and over, slowly getting further as you unlock more powerful spells and abilities. Combat is straightforward and initially very easy, but as you progress further, you need to start considering different tactics. There are multiple spells to choose from, and you can swap them out whenever you need to, though you can only have 3 spells and a potion active at one time. Each spell has the ability to be given new abilities with artifacts that you find and can be improved by spending your experience points. You can also tame a companion to help you once you have unlocked the spell for that. Using a good companion can help make the fights easier. There are many things you can unlock and upgrade throughout the game, which can help to keep the game interesting enough to keep fighting. Boss battles can be challenging, depending which boss you fight and what you have for spells and artifacts. For some of them, using specific tactics can turn a very challenging fight into one that is very easy. Take the time to learn how different spells work and it'll be rewarding.

DREDGE

Horror fishing at its best

Although a little repetitive, this game offers some interesting mechanics for a fishing game. From weird mutations to underwater menaces, the game gives you some nice horror elements that you wouldn't normally see in a fishing game. The fishing in the game is entirely arcade and not realistic in the least, so if you're looking for a realistic fishing game, this won't be the right game for you. Fishing is done through a minigame, where you just click at the right times. This isn't a negative, though. It works well for this game and keeps the pace going. You will meet a variety of unusual and interesting characters and be given a variety of different quests to complete. There are a multiple upgrades to your boat and gear available. Storage while fishing requires fitting everything in by rotating things and moving things around. When you're at a dock, you can move things to your storage if you're not selling it in order to save space. And when you get a trawling net, all fish caught with that stay in the net, letting you get more fish without needing the extra space. Overall, this is a good game and I'd recommend it to anyone interested in a mix of horror and fishing. It may become too repetitive to want to replay the game after you finish it once, but you should get a lot of enjoyment out of it before then.

Tower of Time

Fun game requiring strategy

The game is a fun dungeon crawl. Graphics are well done and the combat is varied and interesting. You need to often use strategy to win battles, though some are easy once you start getting good equipment. There are some grammar mistakes and typos and I've seen at least one minor bug, but nothing serious. You can use up to four characters in your party at a time and can swap them as needed once you unlock them. You start with only two characters. You cannot choose classes for the characters, but can choose the skills they use and there are two upgrade paths for each skill. You can choose whichever path you prefer. Skills can be swapped for free at any time outside of combat. There are a variety of ways to improve your equipment besides just finding better equipment. You can enchant items with a single enchantment, you can upgrade them (this is very limited) to a new tier, you can forge items 0-5 times depending on the item to add additional or improved properties, and crafting. There are different combat modes that you will come across, including standard combat, boss combat where you win after defeating the boss, destroy portal combat where you need to destroy portals to stop enemy spawns, defense combat where you need to defend some orbs and win if you keep at least one from being destroyed. There are also combat challenges that can award you with gems to use for enchants, crafting, and forging, as well as gold, legendary items, and enchantments. Puzzles in the game are generally easy, but fit nicely into the game rather than being forced into it like you find in some games. Overall, I would recommend this game if you enjoy dungeon crawls. My only real complaint is that you can't actually play your main character after the prologue. You just play your subordinates and allies. The only thing you seem able to do with your main character after the prologue is to influence certain "critical" choices that your party is making.

Monster Train

Great deck building game

Originally, I wasn't too sure about this game. It felt a bit boring. But by the end of the second run, I was hooked. The game gets better each run. Definitely a good game to play if you like deck building games.

Deep Sky Derelicts

An interesting card-based game

Overall, the game is interesting and the battles are good. You can control the cards you have available by equipping different tools, weapons, and mods, making this a strategic game. My only issue with it is that sometimes a teammember will attack on their own (this might be some debuff I haven't noticed) and sometimes targeting the right enemy is a pain because they are animated. It's caused me to attack the wrong enemy. You can target enemies from their cards instead of their units, but I prefer targeting the units. Still, it's a good game.

Hitman: Codename 47

Not optimized for modern computers

I remember liking the game when it first came out and recently purchased a combination of all the Hitman games including this one so I decided to try it out. The first problem came when I tried adjusting the graphics and immediately got a Direct3D error. After that, I opened the game and realized the game used the number pad as default control, so had to change that - not a problem, but it was a strange setting. Event he default WASD setting option that it could load up for you didn't use WASD for normal movement. But again, that's just a setting and easily adjusted, so no stars lost for it. The game itself is where the issues are. The right click menu, which you'll use often, is tiny unless you have your resolution set really low. The same for the captions for conversations. In addition, there are numerous graphical glitches. When I used the elevator in the starting tutorial area, I was suddenly falling through gray nothing forever and had to exit to the menu (no ability to save and would have to restart). I also ended up running around with a pistol stuck on its side against my body that I could see whenever I was next to a crate to pick up other weapons in the tutorial. I won't continue to play the game at this point as it just isn't worth it. There are newer games in the series to play and this game just did not age well at all. Graphics are mediocre, but I could forgive those if the rest of the game was worth playing. As I said, I do remember that I liked it 20-ish years ago, so the game itself is probably interesting if you can get past the graphics and UI issues. But you're better off just playing a newer game in the series instead.

Diablo + Hellfire

Great game but expensive

I still have the disk version of this and Hellfire and it runs on Windows 10. It occasionally crashes, but you can play it fine. Just save often. So it isn't worth it to pay $10 for this copy. Okay, so better compatibility and graphics options, but no Hellfire. $10? Nope. The me a 75% sale and I will probably get it just to not need the disk if nothing else. If you haven't played it before, be prepared for dated graphics and missing features that you expect in the genre today. Just finding items on the ground without using a skill from Hellfire can be a pain. Still well worth checking out just to see where it all began.
