I played the orginal FFT back in the playstation days. This scratches that itch in a more basic but still fulfilling way. There is some customization in pre-fight prep and party selection to try out different strategies. I'd say the difficulty is on par for this genre. Some tricky battles but is manageable if you're levelled enough and appropriate fight tactics. The fight maps are pretty good and varied to keep the game fresh as you go along. The mini-game at camp is pretty important to help out during the tougher fights. Why 4 stars though? Certain stage bosses do insane amount of combo hits and you don't know what just happened. It would be great to have a readout or pause feature to let us know why the combo is long. With all their buffs, you're sitting there thinking you know what happened to try to avoid it from happening again. But no, since you can't understand the buff priority sequencing, you get smashed again. It's not impossible to deal with (i beat the game) but the premise behind 'tactics' is to be able to analyze everything but there is no way to do that in an efficient manner. Overall, i enjoyed the game and was bittersweet after i beat the game. the characters are fun and i'll miss chico...
Played with Virtual Desk and VR headset. Really enjoyed the game. I love the thief series and gave this one a shot. Glad I did. This is a stealth game first and foremost. Although you can be 'in your face' with some of the interactions, it'll take away from your score. I found greater enjoyment playing on higher difficulty and avoiding any killing. Makes it tougher and more realistic. I enjoyed the level design which has many different paths to proceed on the maps. The layouts make you think in a vertical sense since you can get close to the ceiling or down underneath the floors. Lots of options. There is some repeativeness and the enemy A.I. is not the best and at times is head-scratching and also comical. Still, worth a purchase and play when on sale on GOG.
I played game through Virtual Desk and my VR headset which makes the game up close and personal. Definitely has atmosphere and crap your pants moments. Even when I had redo's on certain parts, it still caused anxiety. The Virtual Desk VR coupled with the darkness levels in this game and sounds made me play for only an hour or so at a time, especially before bed. Couldn't handle more than that at a time. This is not an action game but is in first person. If players like atmosphere, story, and psych-horror with some good puzzle elements (think Mist or Riven), you should play. Just warning that you may get some armpit sweat while playing. Torches are your best friend.
I played this with my VR headset and Virtual Desk. Very enjoyable. Slick gameplay and a ton of combat moves and tools to use. Puzzles were fun and the music picks up when it's time to get badass. Many good things said already from others. Story telling and voice acting superb. Big City to explore, many times over, atmosphere was great. It is not a 'button mashing' combat game, so look elsewhere if that is what you want. The combat requires patient timing and rhythm to get long-chain combos but is rewarded with higher experience points leading to upgrades. Top quality game.
Played the original back in the CD-ROM days. Loved the original. Now, this remake. The first couple of levels gave me a flat feeling and was wondering if i blew $55 bucks. As the game progresses, I started getting into it and there were some new suprises. I played on hard mode and was using a lot of save scumming for time savings. Now, play this on Ironman and you'll have a serious experience. I didn't enjoy the limited inventory space which forced me to create item camps but I didn't mind the currency system. The later levels, the difficulty ramped up and had to plan accordingly with item transfers. I wish the interface could toggle like the original with three different windows on the bottom. The mouse/key control worked out great for the remake. i also wish you could type on the map but they only give you flags that you can use. I really liked the cyber space visuals, real nice. Next time i play this, will hook up to my oculus virtual desktop and then wear a diaper. Really enjoyed the remake.
First, tips on maximizing your enjoyment. Get the Cosmic Forge Editor and enable your NPC's to enter all areas of Wiz 8. I hated the fact that some NPC's would just leave your party when entering an area they didn't like and dropping all their gear. Secondly, I haven't tried it but I will be getting the combat speed mod as others on GOG reviews indicated. Battles are LONG, even on easy. Don't expect to play this game unless you have at least an hour of time per session. Thirdly, take your time and absorb the atmosphere, story, and intricate combat/magic system/character skill system. Very rewarding and keeps the carrot dangling in front of you as you try to work to get your first fireball spell or Powerstrike skill. Lizardman...Yaahhhh. Wiz 8 is an amazing game considering the bread and butter of the wiz series was grid based gaming and dungeon crawling exploration. I'm pretty sure Sir-Tech knew they were going under and still succeeded in creating an innovative game that, exploration wise, is completely different than its earlier games. I finished wiz 1,2,5,6,7,8 and made it half through wiz 3. If you're new to the series, I'd say just stick with wiz 6,7,8 and for more challenge, do them in that order and port your characters. Only drawback is some new classes in wiz 8 and you'd have to switch classes sometime in 8. These games are known to be tough. but at least the 'ASH' ailment no longer exists. You will feel like a champion when you progress but also feel like it is expected of you. Like getting to the playoffs, but knowing your goal is getting the trophy. The automap feature allows notes which is awesome, like Ultima Underworld style, and auto journals keep quest notes organized and up to date. I have the original box/cd version but my brother lost the first disc! Just bought the GOG version. Gonna rock it again!
