Kentucky Route Zero: PC Edition

Highly Original and Magical

So much more than a standard click-and-point game, KR0 is an experience like none other, full of odd characters that, by the final act, are more like friends or family. There is a complicated story woven through the acts, and you can guide it by your dialog choices. There is a moderate amount of replayability, as you can make different choices during certain points in the game. I was so into the characters that, once it was over, I actually felt a bit depressed. Definitely in my top 5 of all-time now!

Myst IV: Revelation

Fabulous Entry

Finally got around to this chapter is the D'Ni saga. Even in 2020 it looks good; back on its original release date it must have been a marvel. Beautiful scenery and ever-challenging puzzles make for a great getaway from the real world. Nice to have a voice provided by Peter Gabriel (as well as "Curtains" (the B-Side for his song "Big Time") included in the soundtrack.

Stories Untold

Engrossing!

Went into this one with zero expectations, and found myself immersed in the story quite quickly. Nice combination of text and point-and-click, with a nice score and effective sound design (one sound effect in chapter three literally made me jump) It is short, overall, but a decent way to kill a few hours!

Blackwell Bundle

Could be Better

I was rather intrigued with the Blackwell Saga's concept. However, after playing the Blackwell Legacy, I have no interest in continuing, and most of this comes from some of the voice acting, some of which is poorly recorded (yes, the recording issues were mentioned in the commentary track. still, I would have never released anything to the paying public that had overmodulated voices and/or plosives.) I admit I'm picking nits, but bear in mind I have also been doing theatrical and audio work regularly for 30 years, so my ears are sensitive to such things. On the plus side, the artists did a fantastic job of recreating the feel of the early 90s "Sierra Online-Style" games.

Firewatch

Time Well Spent!

Easily one of the best "passive" games I have ever played. Top-notch voice acting brings the characters to life, not to mention the stunning graphics, sound design and score make for a truly immersive experience. The story (and especially the ending) is in itself very "real", and I found that most refreshing.
