...but I spent weeks reading reviews, being sad that I would never buy from Steam what appeared to be a very excellent take on the Zombie Survival genre, complete with open world and very flashy GFX. Now it's finally here on GOG, and that's just utterly awesome.
I admit to never having played any of the earlier X-Series titles - in fact my last game with slightly similar gameplay was Aquanox, many years ago. What I wanted was a Space title with exploration, being "Captain of your own luck", open world trading, pirating, fighting... and from all I see this delivers. There are some parts that could have a little more polish - nothing gamebreaking found so far - and by and large for the sales price including all DLC it's very good value. Especially since GOG gives us DRM free whereas the (arguable prettier) Elite:Dangerous ties you to their servers.
I never played the really old Dungeon Crawling titles religiously, only had a go at Stonekeep back then. But the point is that this is a brilliant game even if you have no aquired preference for that style of gameplay. Yes, there's grid-based movement, locks, traps, riddles, but it's simple a really well-done "light fantasy" title to me. The visuals are stunning for an indie title, the variety between outdoor and indoor levels is well done, the enemies are clever designed and nicely animated. Combat System is a bit repetive, but offers a lot of options. Character creation doesn't leave anything to desire. All in all this seems to be a rare gem that combines interesting, but accessible gameplay with creative design, high production values and a very fair price.
