I'm only 4 hours in, but this is already threatening to be a staple of my games library. The mood draws heavily from both Silent Hill and Resident Evil, as you're travelling through a deeply evil residence in feudal Japan, meeting shifty characters and solving bizarre puzzles while using swords and bows to kill freakish little goblins and dodge other threats that are strong enough to completely fail to be killed by the pitiful weapons you have. Initially the artstyle is what drew me in, while the music, mood and story continue to keep me engaged. The 4:3 aspect ratio makes me feel extremely confined and always keeps me looking over my shoulder, plus the music and SFX only serve to fill me with great dread as I shuffle around each corner, hoping something from Jacob's Ladder doesn't jump out at me. The combat can be a bit frustrating at times, so it can take a little time to learn, but it is not bad for an indie developer. I think they were looking to make this clunky and slow, as it sometimes was in the early Playstation era, but getting the hang of the combat is intensely rewarding and managing the stamina with my desire to flee from any potential threats is a great inclusion and the people that made this game have an incredible talent for storytelling through gameplay, even though I'm not that far in. This game is already drenched in interesting concepts and I'm simultaneously extremely excited to play it, but also terrified of whatever the developers might lob at me next. 10/10 thus far, and I will update with thoughts and criticisms as I progress in the coming weeks/months.
Unfortunately, as the title describes, I'm having a lot of problems with bugs. Characters getting stuck in walls/tight spaces mainly, but it's frustrating enough that I've had to reload my save a couple times. I like what I've been able to play, but the minor bugs do need to get fixed before I can fully recommend buying this. I don't blame the devs or anything, they're trying to port a PS2 game onto the PC; from what I understand, this is not exactly an "easy" task, so I'm more than willing to give them the benefit of the doubt they'll do some work on the bugginess in the future.
Played on PS3 back in the day so much that I eventually had to buy a second disk because of how scratched up it got. This is one of the classics - with that said, it definitely has technical flaws with glitches and crashes on the PC, but it's something I will keep coming back to for the rest of my days. One of the all-time classics. If you encounter bugs, PLEASE do yourself a favor and try to find a workaround. This game does not disappoint.
Played on Steam, thought it's overall pretty great. I'd prefer to have the story be optional rather than required, I don't like listening to the characters blabber at me when I could just be engaging with the ship disassembly. (Not that I disagree or anything, I HARD agree, it's just not my thing to be talked at for a full 2 minutes before I get to do the fun part of the game). I'd suggest playing it, it's pretty relaxing. 8/10
I've played this several times, both on Steam and GOG. It's pretty good when you know what you're doing, but there are a number of parts that are aggravating and unfair, so having a guide open alongside a list of cheats is not the worst plan of action. I think as a game it's not exactly something I'd recommend. The combat is ungodly amounts of irritating since you're mostly relying on melee combat and it's often unclear or difficult to parse where the protagonist will swing. Ammunition is difficult to find and rare when you do, plus the enemies also have bizarre hitboxes, sometimes characters will completely ignore damage and you'll have to tank several unfair hits. As a story, however, this is really funny. The whole tone is off-setting and dark, but the actors and writing are both intentionally and unintentionally hilarious. Sometimes you'll see clips of things that happen some distance away and are either totally nonsensical or just laughably stupid. Most of the story kind of makes sense up until you get into a particular area, and after that it's just completely indecipherable to me. Overall, I'd suggest either using a walkthrough (preferably a full gameplay on Youtube) or watching someone else play this, like Jerma985 or Vinesauce Joel, because they both capture my general feeling pretty well and add on to the whole experience while not shying away from critiquing some of the tedious and illogical parts to it. I'd say this is probably a 7/10 - I had a good time with it, but some of the puzzles and things I had to do were UNBEARABLY annoying and really dragged it down as a result. (I did enjoy it, however.)
