Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell®

One of the all time greats.

Grab the SC Enhanced mod and have fun. Pretend it's 2003, you just got Monster component cables for your Xbox and plugged it all into a 2,000 lb. HD CRT to play this game in glorious 480p, and your eyes are TINGLING. Grab a 2 liter coke and some chips, it's going to be an all nighter.

Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare

The worst version of this game.

Controller support is present, but the game will not recognize d-pad or triggers. Little graphics option are present and the dafult brightness of the game is far too high, this is supposed to be a horror game. I would address that with Reshade, but it has a well known issue working, supposedly if you do not use Galaxy it works, but without Galaxy it has an error that keeps it from launching at all that is far more trouble than such a mediocre and unremarkable game and series is worth to fix. In short, it's crap. Do not buy this.

Vampire®: The Masquerade - Bloodlines™

Buggy game

I played for about two hours and it was ok, I guess. aside from the jank extremely goofy animations. It only autosaves very sporadically, and I lost very close to an hour of progress because the elevator in the tutorial decided I wasn't moving fast enough to get out when it opened. So it closed. No ability to open back up the door on the panel. No ability to go back up and try again. It refused to open. Well, I refuse to replay that hour. Refund requested. I would think this much vaunted unofficial patch would get things like that. What a waste.

Raiden Legacy

If all else fails...

This is the method of last resort to play these games. The games themselves seem to be fine, but the menu system used to navigate them is a disaster. It is INCREDIBLY slow, with the transition from one menu to the next, least of all to the games, taking an outright absurd amount of time. It took me more than a full minute just to pause and turn off autofire. The games themselves, however, run fine when they finally start in my experience.

DOOM 3

Aging like fine wine.

*My views are based on the OG Doom 3, which is included with the BFG Edition purchase as of this writing. Doom 3 has always had a mixed reputation, (at least once the frenzy over its then very advanced graphics engine died down) having played the game again, but finally experiencing the PC version after years of the Xbox port and the BFG on PS3, I can safely say I feel like their absolutely was a very solid and worthwhile entry to the Doom franchise made here. (Doom 64, similarly, faced initial criticism, but a very good consensus has formed around it) As opposed to the high adrenaline action Doom is known for these days, this entry focused on an intense and foreboding atmosphere, almost feeling at times like a first person Survival Horror game. It's best played in a dark room with headphones on. Mayhaps a bit too many monster closets, and it definitely feels a bit long in the tooth in the middle. Additionally, the shotgun in the vanilla campaign never felt or looked quite right to me. Thankfully their is a plethora of mods out there for this to fix my weapons complaint, and even a simple quick mod to fix the gravest sin the main campaign committed, not having the super shotgun. Best played with kb&m, but if you prefer a controller the BFG edition has robust support for those. It's regularly on sale, so get it while it's hot.

SILENT HILL 2

An excellent remake.

Despite the bizzare negative reputation of Bloober team, (behind the similarly excellent The Medium) this game is a prime example of a remake done right, with utmost respect and love for the source material. Unlike one of the previous western made Silent Hill games, Homecoming, the changes to combat make sense and feel really good. The sin of Homecoming, shoving combat on you repeatedly, is not repeated here. It's better, much better, but it's not shoved in your face and made the prime attraction. The main event here is the town itself and the characters, and they've never been better. Konami secured excellent VA talent to bring the cast to life, and added nice touches to flesh them out just a smidge better. Make sure to look for the various easter eggs sprinkled throughout hinting at connections to the classic game. They have expanded on events to give the game more playtime, and unlike a remake like Final Fantasy 7, it fits and feels natural. Ignore the permanently offended puritanical conservative gooners meddling with things they do not understand, if you love survival horror, this one is an absolute treat.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy

Bad controls.

Default controller settings are very nonsensical, and when you try to change them in the controller configuration it just says "use options menu", so I cannot remap the controls to be sensible. As always with gog MK games, utterly unplayable.

Mortal Kombat 1+2+3

Unplayable ports.

The controls are god awful, and even using the mapping tool to use an old controller just doesn't work. The D-pad doesn't respond, and using the joystick instead somehow leaves you incapable of jumping forwards or back, only straight up. An absolute waste of money.

Tex Murphy: Under a Killing Moon

I WANT to like it, but...

It employs 3d environs for some odd reason, and the movement controls within them in the mandatory parts where you must move about are TERRIBLE. Even for their time this was absolutely awful game design, and not something I can get past at all.

Star Wars™: Jedi Knight™ II - Jedi Outcast™

Overrated

I'm not sure where the fun lightsaber combat game is. Apparently its's hidden behind an incredibly mediocre FPS game with bad aiming like the hero Kyle is a cross eyed drunk with bad vision who lost his glasses. That with the very odd enemy behavior to run right towards you, because it knows you can't hit him with anyu vague accuracy at all makes playing this incredibly frustrating. This has aged very poorly, and like 90% of the GoG catalogue, is a mess top to bottom.
