Reminiscent of multigenre games of old, this is more of a blend between personal story telling while building a fleet of ships while managing dwindling resources. I was going to write up a "X meets Y" type of thing, but it is actually quite unique. Definitely has the freeform building you know, but also a more dynamic FTL like approach, in the sense that it isnt a roguelike where you are always on the edge of your seat, taking risks, but more that you can and do have time to slowly approach problems or dangers. In the end, things may end up falling apart anyway though. Hard to tell since balancing definitely isnt done at all in an early access game, but I have had fun so far, 10+ hours, that alone makes it worth it for me. Looking forward to the future!

I feel like Surviving Mars has opted towards substance and "feeling" instead of pure gameplay; for the better. I feel things when playing this game, similar to some stories in Stellaris. Make no mistake, there is enough gameplay in this game to make it very interesting, but a lot of story too. Underlined by the excellent soundtrack, I have spent many good hours, feeling like I was building something substantial. Especially when interested in actual Mars colonisation or dealing with the ramifications on human life, I can't recommend this game enough.
