Fantastic city builder with bug

Would be 5 star if it was polished But currently novices in monasteries bug out and are not going to work in their monastery buildigns :( Also whenever you get a message that someone couldn't reach their destination you can move there with your camera, but the window with the message is on top of what your trying to see - when you close it there is no marker pointing to where exactly the problem occurs. I waited until the full release of the game yet it still feels unpolished :-(

Age of Wonders: Planetfall

The Terry Pratchett of Space Strategy

AoW is my favourite game series and Planetfall so far has become my favourite of the series. The game seems to have even more hilarious wordplay and dire penguins are also in! The gameplay has been upped. All new features (sectors, unit mods, overwatch, research tree) as well as the return of true flying (can't be attacked with ground based melee) work together nicely. The campaign is also pretty cool with a lot of flavour and branches (haven't finished it yet though). Edge scrolling with the mouse is not in (yet?) so I use "WASD" (dragging also works) but that is really the only small drawback I can find so far. I also haven't encountered any bugs yet (but I read in the forums that the Xbox version had some trouble that are already resolved by now). Overall a very immersive, strategically challenging, strategy game with interesting lore that is, for a 4x game, exceptionally good at "generating/telling a story" while you play. Obviously I can only recommend it!

Age of Wonders 3

Best combat based TBS

Age of wonders is a turn based strategy game in which you customize your lead character, choose the race your are going to play and then set off to explore a fantasy themed world. The game focusses very much on strategical movement on the map as well as in the tactical combats, so don't expect as much "quite time" as in e.g. civ. when you are not waging a war you are busy to explore the many treasure sites for economic advantage, items and/or new spells. Things that made me give 5 stars are: - It has the best tactical combat system I have seen so far. - Due to many different units, races, classes and specialisations you can choose from it has a high replay value - Despite being so rich in structures and units it is fairly balanced. - It is great fun in multiplayer and a game can be actually finished in 2 hours. The few bad things nearly all AI related: - Sometimes the AI moves itself in unneccesary awkward positions on the strategic map - The AI "cheats" it basically knows where all your units are, except those that have been invisible for some turns, so its much harder to sneak by the AI than a human player. - No Linux support for AoW on GoG at the moment of this review. But those problems are more than offset by the really great and immersive gameplay :)
