Resident Evil

Barebones Port, Still Great Fun

Apart from ease of use and the uncensored cutscenes, I couldn't imagine why someone would want to play this particular version. The PSX release is a classic, but even that one wouldnt fare much better than the PC release from my point of view. This release has no options to speak of, the only thing you can change are the controls (by pressing A on the keyboard). If you are new to the series and want to start from the beginning, I highly recommend the HD Remake of this game, since the old version feels very barebones. Lots of features taken for granted in later titles are not present. like swapping out the grenade launchers ammo, escape items or the quickturn. However, all that said, the original Resident Evil has a few things going for it: It is decidedly shorter, very easy to read visually, Jills story is the easiest in all titles, even easier than in the Remake (perfect for newcomers, despite my praise for the Remake)... And above all: The God-Tier dialog and voice acting. This is the main reason to play the original, because by god, these dialogs and actors are just something else entirely, only surpassed by House Of The Dead. I bought this, started with Jill straight away and tried to trigger as many Barry cutscenes as I could and I had the time of my life. So if you're into old games, want to experience where it all started, or you want that nostalgia kick, buy this release!!! Else I'd really recommend the remake.
