Resident Evil 3

Well recreated, yet problematic

I find this restored version most satisfying. The content we enjoyed back in 2000 has be faithfully ported to modern systems and the glory days of save and executable hacking can be relived and enjoyed as much as they were in the original release. There is, however an issue with the direct settings. On my system, the prerendered backgrounds became fragmented by vertical and horizontal lines that couldn't be removed when I changed the aspect ratio and screen size options. I had to leave them on default setting, determined by the program, in order to correct the issue. The lines were removed, but it has to be said that full screen viewing is not possible with the current version. This is the only failing of the port, but if you are willing to overlook it, you will enjoy what was, and can be again, a great game, filled with suspense, choices and excellent pieces.

Resident Evil 2

Improved, yet faithful to the original

A long needed update, with a 60 fps option enabled by default. Cutscenes still play at 30fps, but the in-game framrate boost is most welcome. It makes fighting the enemies more challenging and the effects more impressive, but that enhances the experience. The screen resolution not reaching the full scale of modern monitors is disappointing, at the same time it offers a tasty dose of nostalgia for those of us who played the PC version back in the day. Once again, Capcom does its fans a service. Now this game will never be lost, its discs scratched beyond repair. I am a very happy owner of Resident Evil 2, before, now and forever.

Mafia Classic

The return of a legend

Well-researched, fun gameplay, witty and soulful dialogue - Mafia laid the foundations for the successful narrative driven games to come. It offers an authentic environment, a true to life mob war and the believeable struggles of a man who lost everything, yet left behind a legacy that few men in his position could earn. Although the gameplay has been outdone by Mafia II in terms of stealth mechanics and the destruction of lights, the rolling mechanics and the level designs still offer shooting fans a few thrills. Both the cars and the guns will offer everyone visual treats to enjoy. Historians will lap this up. Mafia III could have learned a thing or two about character depth, as rich as the story is. The characters of this game are class and the drama is certainly entertaining. Thank you GOG for hosting this groundbreaking title.

Dungeon Keeper Gold™

The pioneer of the dungeon simulator

Colorful, inventive, well finished, with a very cynical overlord to boot, Dungeon Keeper showed us how games of strategy could take form in more cerebral and varied ways. The units are very dear and the structures are the stuff of mythic legend and sorcery, all neatly recreated. The skilled and crafty AIare challenging and the malevolent voice makes the game even more compelling to the sick side of our minds that wants to get out.

Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition

The FPS that started the revolution

Duke Nukem began as a colorful and innovative platform game, but 3D transformed the game into something much more - a staging point from which to launch the new generation of fps games. It incorporated a more realistic weapon holding position, sharper level designs and more experiences to be had, (flying, swimming, freezing and shrinking enemies). Duke Nukem showed the world what could be done in video games, not only in terms of gameplay, but in originality. The dialogue of Duke is funny, witty and feisty, all at once. Not a game to be missed for the scholar, or the enthusiasts, that want to really know how first person games really took off. No offense to ID software.

Unreal Tournament GOTY

The best of the series

Even though this is an old title and so many other games have come since, UT remains the most well finished and creative of its genre. The weapons are the most advanced creations that any 21st century technologist could think of and the translocator is a superb device. The level designs are excellent and the game play is really fluid. The other titles in the UT line had great features, but the first installment was the most refined one.

Syndicate Plus™

The idea that inspired the future

Syndicate breathed life into the techno-punk genre like no other. It created a dark, foreboding, but nonetheless compelling and imaginative futuristic world, in which human beings become one with machines, in many ways thought of, but never put into practice before. The setting is a technophobe's worst nightmare, but a technocrat's finest dream. The teamwork is well implemented and creates a silent kind of camaraderie that makes the game compelling. The music adds great atmosphere to the game and the weapon effects would be pleasing to the gunsmith's ear. A hallmark game.

Broken Sword 3: The Sleeping Dragon (2003)

A good game that is too short.

Broken Sword 3 is a well made game, but it is can be completed far too quickly. There are not many characters in the game by comparison to the first two Broken Swords and this harms the game. It feels too empty and brief at times. However, the proud tradition of mystery and suspense continues in this addition to the series. The more proactive, keyboard controls are hard to get used to at first, but they make the chore of moving around a little more challenging. The puzzles are intuitive and require some thought to solve. The little that does happen in the game is enjoyable and worth remembering.

Far Cry® 2: Fortune's Edition

A great game with a lack of depth

Far Cry 2 is a wonderful experience. Its sandbox environment, the settings and the many skirmishes you can get into are all highly invigorating. The freedom of movement was unparalleled for the time Far Cry 2 came out, and even now, it's among the most flexible. The only thing I have against the game is the shallow narrative. What could be a highly entertaining story, is let down by very mission specific dialogues, action only sequences and a lack of character development. The people encountered could take part in many events throughout the landscape, but they are very basic in their behavior and views. Hints of personality show through at times, but not enough to make them truly compelling. Having said that, the gameplay is top notch. There is a huge variety of weapons to unlock as the game progresses and the driving sessions can feel like luxury cruises. Just getting to take a car and see the fields, mountains, streams, waterfalls and local animals is a treat. Pity no monkeys or felines are around, though.
