Lords of Xulima - Deluxe Edition

A flawed but still decent RPG

I cant help to review this game with my personal opinion, but first i want to lay the facts on some neutral ground. The core game itself its decent. The game features some original RPG elements and mechanics, which is nice, battle system is classic and simple. I only felt that the main storyline was a bit weak, i wont spoil anything, but in general, you dont get to feel much inmersion into the story, and although its original, it still feels a bit off putting. Side quest are generic, and boring. Now, on to my opinion and critique. This game is annoying. Its hard to explain, but the game has a lot of elements and designs that are introduced simply to annoy you, in a original idea to provide some "realism" or to make the game feel "hardcore", it ends up feeling like your simply wasting time or just getting trolled. You will experienced it when walking through a web with spiders... Mind your speaker volume, this game boast some peaking/clipping samples that are just annoying, i ended up playing it with the master volume ingame down to 20%... You are walking through a jungle? prepare to get sting by mosquitos every 5 seconds. They only deal 1 or 2 of damage to a random character, and by the time you reach the jungle, your characters have pretty much 200-400 + of health. So it doesnt have an impact in your travels, but you still hear that annoying buzz of the mosquito everytime you get sting. The game features several mechanics like this, that are applied to create inmersion but end up being annoying. The art style and color scheme is off putting, i couldnt shake the feeling i was playing a Facebook game app. I rather take old DOS graphics that this game heavily rounded figures with high color and contrast. The game favors the need to grind experience, but it prevents you from doing it, with the ambush system. Forcing you to walk up and down a corridor just to get ambushed and get the experience and spoils. In conclusion. I dont recomend this game.

Avernum: Escape From the Pit

Slow paced, carefully written epic story

I remember playing a demo of the original version of this game back in the day. It seemed decent but i never bought, to be honest the art style and graphics in general was off putting to my liking. I come from the DOS era and color scheme + art are important factors when i decide whether or not i like a game, besides gameplay of course. And i must say, in this remastered version, they got it right. The game looks and stinks of good old RPG, every setting and place is unique, even when using the same textures, every place have an unique design and its decorated with love and passion. As a plus, you get some decent animations on attacks and movement and some decent spell/skill effects. Now, about the story, i wont spoil anything, but i will say that the story is very well planned out. From the beginning to the end, little by little, you will grow to care about the little people in the game and you will read all those damned tooltips and conversations (there are a lot in this game, get yer reading glasses and get ready to work out those eye muscles from left to right). The main quest is epic enough to keep you hooked, but the side quest are decent and cool too and some give you really nice rewards. Now about the gameplay, its a turn based combat RPG, the mechanics and very simple, youll get the feel of it very early in the game, the skill system is a simple tree with small ramifications, the game gives you total freedom about the development of your characters, so you can go bananas with a dual wielding sword magician if you want, and theres even talents and skills that can make that build viable. The game favors farming, so in my opinion, never skip a battle, youll need all that exp for late game. Once you reach the lvl cap (you can still gain levels but your stats and skill wont be raised as much) you could say your ready for the endgame. Just one simple advice, BUILD A DUAL WIELDING SWORD WARRIOR, it will make your life so full of joy.
