This might well be a good game. I have no way of knowing. For the life of me I could not come up with a control scheme that let me play the game at all. Using the mouse and keyboard setup the game used some sort of absolutely insane mouse acceleration, such that the tiniest movement of my mouse would overshoot any possible degree of movement. Going for an isometric view slowed the mouse down but also made both controling the game an uninutive chore as well as seemingly making the mouse highly unresponsive to left/right clicking. Nowhere in the options menu are there any options whatsoever for disabling the mouse acceleration or otherwise tweaking it's responsiveness. I've struggled with this mess for a while with zero luck and frankly have lost all motivation to try any more. I'm uninstalling the game.
I originally bought this game, back when it was still in beta. I bought the 'second edition' Warband, as well, full price. I am extremely stingy with my money, considering few games worth the price most charge nowadays when fresh. This is one of the few I consider well worth the full price, let alone the ultra low price charged on GOG. The game is given major legs with the extensive mod community that has produced all manner of expansions. I have for instance been playing the mod, 'Prophesy of Pendor', virtually non-stop for the last two months. This is a game I first bought six years ago!
While the graphics on this game may be dated, as one would expect of many GOG games, the game mechanics behind those graphics is not at all dated. This is a very solid game that can easily satisfy you night after night. Value for money, at the price GOG has this game now, you would be hard pressed to find better. I spent months with this game when it was first released. I have gone back to it on a few occasions over the years to re-experience it. If you have not yet experienced it, and you are the sort who enjoys deep strategy games, by all means buy this game.
I bought this game full price when it first came out as a shrink wrap game. Over the years and many moves, I had lost it. Now that it is on GOG, I can reacquire it in a manner I know will work and not fill my system with problems. If someone were to ask me, "What are the best computer games you have ever played?" I would without so much as thinking rattle off, "Deus Ex and Fallout..." and then I would pause to consider the many hundreds of other games I have purchased over the years to see what might come in as a distant third. Deus Ex is that good of a game.
This is the only CRPG that has ever elicited an emotional response from me. I literally had tears streaming down my cheeks as the end credits rolled when I completed the game, no so much because it was over, but because the story that I had gotten so immersed in was that powerful. The game succeeded on all fronts, with an extremely intelligent and customizable character creation/development system and a tactically interesting turn based combat system. The world design, the interactions, the quests, even the now dated graphics, were all top notch. And the music and atmospherics stand the test of time to this day. If you have not yet played this game, buy it now.
