Wolfenstein: The Old Blood

Does Its Job

Everything shooters do, it does. It's a great FPS. And that's all. So it's a great standard for the genre, but doesn't have great ways to stand out apart from being classic and blowing up Nazis. The stealth elements aren't ideal, there's no fun gimmicks like in hero shooters or combo shooters, the speed and combat and everything is smooth and good. I like the game plenty, but it would be hard for me to point at anything it does to impress people. Hence, 4/5.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous

It's Just Good

Owlcat and Larian own this genre, and I like this genre. Characters writing is smart, funny, and consistent, with even dumb characters being written in clever ways. Honestly I'm not sure the game needs more than that. But the rest of it is also good. Sure, there's any number of things a person could complain about in this game. Some people don't like the army battle minigame. Some people don't like the tile puzzles. Some people hate a particular character's motivation (or more often, don't understand it and so think the character is just an idiot). Some people think there's too many rules and abilities and that makes the game clumsy or hard to get into. I don't have any of those problems. The writing is legitimately entertaining, the story develops and becomes more compelling over time, and the battles let you flex your tactical and strategic thinking. I enjoy the minigames and puzzles as a refreshing break from the usual gameplay. I like all the different options for how you can approach victory in battle. And I like that not every NPC makes sense to a stranger, because they've got their own reasons and don't open up to people who don't show interest in them. Try it. Or just try Kingmaker, it's predecessor, which is on sale all the time. If you don't like it, that's fine. But if you do like it, there's not really better options.
