The Signal From Tölva

A fun but flawed game

First the good, the art style, environment, lore and sound engineering are great! This game has such as distinct style, I really got immersed in the world. I seriously hope this universe gets a sequel to expand on the ideas laid out here. Unfortunately, once you get into this impressive world you realize there really isn't much in it. You've seen the loop before: explore the world, capture the point, collect loot, upgrade character repeat. The combat isn't bad at all, but the gameplay is seriously lacking. That being said, my favorite parts are actually the quiet moments when it's just you exploring some spooked out ruins. I knew going into this that this game was kinda shallow in the gameplay department. That being said, I seriously love the world here and hope Big Robot knocks it out next time!

Sublevel Zero Redux

A flawed but fun game

First the game is short and designed to be played multiple times to unlock everything. That's not a bad thing, but it becomes kind of a slog after the first two or so times. The perma-death mechanic is also not something I like, but I also don't hate it. I also found most of the weapons to be somewhat underwhelming, with most of them being either really overpowered (like the minigun) or completely useless (anything plasma) with little middle ground. On the plus side the music and pixel graphics are great and the game runs phenomenally well. The sound engineering is also very well done with audio cues to help with enemy tells or collectibles. The controls are also tight and responsive, any time I died I knew exactly why and never felt like any of my deaths were cheap. Overall there is fun to be had with this game, but it's definitely not perfect.

Deponia

The first (and best) in the series

Deponia is a point 'n click game in the vein of classics like Escape from Monkey Island. The art is impressive hand drawn art for the most part, and the characters are all over the top. The only drawbacks are the same frustrations that befall all game in the genre. This game does work hard to avoid them, but the vague directions still occasionally make the game beyond frustrating. Even then the game has a hot key to help show what items Rufus can interact with.

Pharaonic

Gitting Gud in 2.5d!

Think of this as a Dark Souls clone in 2.5d. Well timed parries mixed with rolls and stamina management mean that you have to play it perfectly or you will likely die. If you've played Dark Souls or it's clones you know what to expect for better or for worse. Traps, difficult combat, and more. There are even shrines which function as respawn points, and can be used in a pinch to restore health but revive all enemies in the level. The graphics are cel-shaded art which I like, and the game works well for me. Highly recommend for fans of the Souls style games.

Descent

It's baaaaaaaaaaaack!

Arguably one of the greatest cult games of the early 90's, this game is the game that got me into gaming. There's little I can say about this game that hasn't already been said, great gameplay, great level design, great music, varied weapons. This game is amazing.

To The Moon

One of the best indie games ever

While this game looks and plays like a 16 bit era rpg with minor puzzles, it's phenomenal score, top-notch writing and mixture of humor with emotion will draw you in. It's rare that I've played a game that made me laugh, swear and want to cry all within about single level. I can't wait for the sequel!
