Delta Force: Black Hawk Down Platinum Pack

Intense tactical shooter

Black Hawk Down is a real step up from the first two titles. I t has an immersive setting surrounding the famous "Balck Hawk Down" mission that became popular with the Hollywood movie. The Black Hawk campaign focusses more on urban firefights than wide range open maps like in the first two games. Also you have passages were you shoot from a helicopter or Humvie. The graphics didn't age that well. Like most early 2000s games the maps nowadays seem pretty empty and a flat desert with the same bush over and over again can't win a prize. The GoG version also doesn't support HD and widescreen by default. But the game runs great on modern systems and is still a lot of fun to play.

Call of Cthulhu: Prisoner of Ice

Short, easy and not very lovecraftian

I first played this in 2021 so I have no nostalgia for the game. It has surprisingly easy and intuitive controls for such an old adventure and the cinematic scenes look great. It's mostly very linear and easy but sometimes I got stuck and had to look at a walk-through. Some items and buttons are only a few pixels and are hard to find. As a big fan of H.P. Lovecraft I have to admit that modern games like Dark Corners of the Earth, Darkness Within or Conarium can create the atmosphere of insanity and unspeakable horrors much better.

Dagon: by H. P. Lovecraft

A short Lovecraft visual novel

First of all this is not a game. It's an audio book of Lovecraft's short story "Dagon" with some interactive scenes to visualize the story. In most scenes you can look around at 180° and click on an object to continue the telling or find hidden clues that give you background information about H.P. Lovecraft. The "playtime" is about 30 minutes. The english audio is great and the dark ambient soundtrack fits great for the atmosphere. The weakness of this project is the main problem most media about Cthulhu tales have. It's about unspeakable horror which presence and visability alone are the overwelming that it drives men crazy or into siucide. It's nearly impossible to print this in a picrue or visualize it right in a video game. In general the design is great when it comes to earthly places like a hotel room or a hospital. Dagon's island lacks a bit in details and when you have a glimpse at a Great Old One it's... underwelming. So it's a great small journey into Lovecraftian tales which shows deep love and faszination for the author but lacks in depth and level design. A nice cosmic horror snack. Not more not less.

The Shore

A speed date with Cthulhu

If you're into lovecraftian horror you should give this one a try. It's a mix of adventure, walking simulator and horror survival game. The playtime is just about an hour so it feels a bit stuffed. As if the developer had no time or budget to make a bigger game but still wanted all his ideas in it. It starts calm when you wake up on a strange cold island of black sand and rocks and search for your daughter. You can explore some stuff, collect items and solve simple switch puzzles. Unfortunately you can't go far because the level design limits you to the small area where you find your next clue. If you try to get past a barrier it can happen that you get stuck and have to reload. After making your way to a portal you find yourself in another dimension, summon some Ancient Ones, get chased by small and big (very very BIG) enemies to finally refocus in an emotional ending why you came to that island in the first place. So the game is not great in any of the genres it covers. Compared to other lovecraftian games like "Dark Corners of the Earth", "Darkness Within" or "Conarium" it lacks some depth and finesse. But if you can't get enough of Cthulhu go for it!

Clive Barker's Undying

Underrated dark atmosphere shooter

Horror games were still rare in 2001 and Undying delivered a great experience back in the day. Your journey on an remote Irish island brings you to a haunted mansion, its garden, catacombs, ancient ruins and even another dimension. The gameplay is fluent and streight forward. It's always fun replaying the story. Clive Barker's style is written all over the places. If you like his books you'll love this game. At the end you can even experience some Lovecraftian horror in this FPS masterpiece. Technically it's based on the first Unreal engine and therefor has some strange flaws like kind of glossy and polished looking textures which is weird for this gothic style setting. And the viewing angles sometimes stretch figures oddly. Maybe Quake 3 engine would have suited the game better. The GoG Version unfortunately is poorly adapted to modern systems. When a clean installation and start from GoG Galaxy the version looks pretty much like back in the day. In the in game setup you only have a few 4:3 resolutions to choose from. In the folder you find nGlide 3dFX wrapper to change the resolution. During the game I experienced some minor graphic glitches. Go to the forums and get the fan made patches for better textures, gameplay tweaks and widescreen support.

HUNTDOWN

That's just too much references

Huntdown is so full of classic movie and game references that it forgot to be something unique on its own. This fast past platform action game is really nice and enjoyable. Like a mix of Judge Dredd, Blackthrone, Turrican, Contra... and that's the problem. You're too occupied ordering all those references in your brain that are thrown at you at such a high pace that you got no time recognize this game as something new and special. It's like watching your favorite movies and play all the action games from the 80s and 90s all at once. Pure retro overload. I think this would be much more enjoyable if the game just tried to be "Huntdown" instead of all those other games it references.

Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

One of the best Lovecraftian games

If you like H.P. Lovecraft's stories and action-adventures this is a must have. The gameplay is something between adventure, stealth game and first-person shooter and not allways great at each discipline. But it let's you discover a of places you know from the stories. You investigate a crime in Innsmouth, fight Dagon on a boat, explore an mysterious island and finally encounter Cthulhu in an unearthly place. If you can't get along with the game mechanics just get a godmode cheat and enjoy the breathtaking levels.

AMID EVIL

My favorite retro FPS game so far

Graven is by far the best new old FPS game I have encountered in a while. I grew up with all the classics like Doom, Qukae, Hexen, RoTT, Duke Nukem 3D, Blood and so on and I'm addicted to these games until today. Trying new ports, remakes, mods and stuff. Most of the new oldschool style FPS games like Dusk, Amid Evil or Wrath couldn't get me really hooked. Graven did. It has this great retro feeling looking like a polished mix of Hexen, Undying and Quake and yet has it's very own character. What is unique here is the amazing level design. Placed in a medieval town and having to complete tasks to unlock areas is so satisfying and adictive. The gameplay is fast and rewarding. I love it. The early access version is quite good. The most issues I have encountered are the AI which get stuck sometimes, glitch or spawn strangely. Hope to get the final version soon.

Wacky Wheels

Get the shareware instead

It's nice to see this in GoG for nostalgia but it's not really worth your time and never was. Apogee made a cheap copy of Mario Kart for PC and left out everthing that makes that game an all time classic. The avergae playtime in GoG is less than 30 minutes. So for some rounds of boring animal racing in flat boring courses you can get the shareware for free and save your money for other great games on GoG.
