Take it slower than you think you have to. An excellent simulation game.
Just as the title says. This was one of the most engaging 4x games ever made, in the vein of civilization, but plus a story. Your units are loosely customizable, and it did a great job allowing you to create different types of societies.
A very nice turn based strategy game.
