Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain

What a terrible combat system

The game starts pretty cool, you get ambushed outside of a tavern by mysterious strangers. However, it immediately blows it by having a non-existant interface, and your character telegraphing his only attack so much you'd think he was trying to write a letter to his grandma.

Songs of Conquest

Always starts on small monitor

I have two monitors, and one is very obviously my second monitor. I have no idea why this game insisits on starting there. Clearly, it doesn't want me to play it.

Loria

An homage to the classic RTS titles

I can't play this because I suck too much at RTS. But, if you were good at games like WC3 and CnC, you'll probably love this.

Warcraft II Battle.net Edition

Runs great but not at full resolution

The game runs perfectly for me, I'm not getting any problems. I only play the single-player missions, but the skirmish against AI works fine as well. I haven't tested this on LAN, but I know Blizzard shut down the old Battle.Net services so don't expect to get any match-making done over the internet unless you find some way to connect to third-party servers. The reason it's only 4 stars is because I can't crank the resolution up to maximum without the game window getting really small. It's not really a problem though, because this game doesn't live on high-res graphics. Other than that, it runs perfectly fine. Highly recommend if you want to re-play the story or challenge the AI. Just don't count on Online play.

EVERSPACE™

Everything about this game is great!

If you love Space-shooters, this is the perfect game for you. Somehow the game combines fast-paced combat, ability management, exploration, crafting and ressource management all into one without it feeling either bloated or boring. I've never made it to the end yet, but I don't really care. Every tun there is so much cool stuff to see and do that even though it's always the same stuff remixed, it never feels old. That might be in part because the controls are top-notch and the graphics are amazing. The atmosphere really grips me, actually creeping me out a little if I get too close to a black hole. Another cool feature is how impactful the skills are. One of them actually stops time, allowing you to defeat enemies you normally wouldn't be able to. In addition, there are a ton of small things you can find in each system that make exploration feel immersive and rewarding. I like the idea of Rogue-likes, but generally they don't really capture me the way Everspace has. I'd say give it a shot even if you don't like Rogue-likes usually.

Blood & Gold: Caribbean!

great but annoying

An amazing upgrade to Mount and Blade, except you NEVER can let your character die. If you ever die, the game is over. You will be stripped of all your property, thrown on a random island and not be allowed to leave until you earn money. Which is impossible without an army, which you don't have. The only option you have is to bank enough money VERY early on. If you manage to do this, you'll be fine. But get ready to save-scum your way to savings, or use the magic alt+F4 combo if you selected ironman mode.

Warcraft: Orcs and Humans

A great game with some big flaws

The gameplay is very straight-forward. You control a medieval-inspired town that you can expand using ressources, and your job is to destroy the enemy town. During missions, you may be faced with different challenges. Aside from the obvious resolution downgrade due to it being an old DOS game, it has a lot of charme that is still immersive in 2019. It really has a unique visual style. Especially the Orc faction is quite different from subsequent Warcraft titles. The big problems come from the controls. Compared to other RTS games, players will have to do quite a bit of rethinking. For instance, there is no right-click action, meaning you must manually select EVERY action for a unit. Units can only be grouped as high as 4, and you cannot assign battle groups to hotkeys. Basically, get ready to do a lot more clicking than you might be used to. Despite these problems, it's certainly a must for any Warcraft fan, or someone who wants to see what the roots of RTS gaming were like.

Jade Empire: Special Edition

amazing game with a Bioware ending

I finished this game when it came out, so I don't have a lot of time on it here. In the broadest strokes it is an interesting blend of a linear RPG like Gothic or NWN but with a combat system more akin to Tekken. Your characters get moves, different fighting styles, etc. It is sort of if Soul Calibur had an actual RPG section. Sounds interesting, and it is. I don't remember too much of the story, but it is both linear and very immersive. Although you follow a set path, you have the usual Bioware-style choices between good and evil with some interesting twists along the way. Especially towards the later part of the game, where you get the option to enslave the minds of your companions in order to bend them to your will if they get uppity and try to leave the party. THAT was something I wish we had in way more games. It gives the game a very unique feeling and immerses the player in the story like few other mechanics can. So, why only 3 stars you ask? Well, like I said in the description, "classic bioware ending". You know how it is, you spend the entire game having a nuanced position between light and dark, carefully weigh each decision, and then you get to the end and the game asks you one question and POOF! The entire alignment system becomes obsolete. WTF. Why did Bioware think this is good game design? But that would be okay if the game wasn't so short. They could easily have added two more acts. Remember that awesome mind slave mechanic I mentioned? It is really cool, but it happens right at the end of the game so it feels like it doesn't matter. And it actually doesn't. That's why this game only gets 3 stars, because it teases you with one of the coolest things in RPG history and then immediately takes it away again by ending the story. It's as if the devs wanted to troll the players. So, TL DR: This is an awesome game, but it has some big flaws. Still worth the play, 100% recommended. A beautiful game that wasted a lot of potential.
