Of all the games I have ever played, Total Annihilation is probably my second favorite of all time. The only problems the game has are the result of age and oversight by the developers; the economy functions somewhat oddly in longer games, and Naval is always sluggish. But aside from that, everything is beautiful. The sound effects just make me squirm inside, and they've held up remarkably well for their age. Unit balance is exemplary, with players paying mostly for sidegrades when building a new factory, as opposed to more powerful rehashes of previous units. And most importantly, the game is fun! Whether you're utterly annihilation your enemy with a tidal wave of endless units, struggling for dominance as the two of you attempt to put the other in a metaphorical headlock, or attempting to go out with a bang as your enemy rips through your base, the game is ALWAYS fun. Also the D-Gun. Best. Weapon. Ever.
