The game is an absolute blast early on but can be very unforgiving and seems to scale up in difficulty quite dramatically in sections. This can reduce the fun factor. At the recent deeply discounted price I absolutely recommend giving it a go. At the full price of AU$50 though, I would not.
TLDR: Worth a buy if you enjoy arcade style flight sims. You'll feel like a badass without needing to dedicate large chunks of time in each sitting. VR Reverb G2 only review: My first real go at an arcade style air combat game since the 90's it'd have to be. The good: -You can be loaded up and flying a mission within a few minutes which is great for those of us who have limited time available for gaming. -You can pull off high g maneuvers without ripping wings off -Pretty much straight into the action -Visually quite nice to play The not so good: -Some of the mission info on screen is a bit distracting and at times unhelpful. I encountered "Return to mission area" while dogfighting, but had no idea what direction the mission area was. Unsure if i got shot down, or I was out of the area too long because I got kicked from the mission and had to restart. -HOTAS control binding seemed a bit fiddly, -When given instructions to land, you're told to brake when you land - there's no brake key binding I could find. I still prefer the more advanced / in depth simulators, but this is a good change of pace for some good ol casual mayhem
Enjoyable for a while, but ultimately repetitive with seemingly no way to really please the people you're expected to lead. I must be missing some crucial game mechanic cause I can have 100+ people available, but none of them will build the houses etc I've got queued up. I can only assume they're too busy complaining to actually help rectify the problem. I'm sure I'll get back into the game at some point perhaps.
A good story in my opinion with some difficult choices to make and in some instances, no good answer, well, not one I'd typically give. A good size map to walk around in with some pretty tense moments - not in the sense I'm used to, ie enemies jumping out at you, but more just the setting and music leading you to believe something sinister is going to happen. Personally I feel they've done a great job setting the tone and mood throughout the game. Is the game re-playable? Perhaps, I'll go through it again another time and change my answers up to see if that alters the story line in any way, in at least one instance it must. Regarding price, I specifically waited for a sale, and truthfully, you should too. The play through took me about 5-6hrs roughly with a bit of mindless wandering. The play through is enjoyable, BUT, I would have been a bit displeased with myself had I spent the full asking price (AU$19.99). Just my opinion and how I compare price paid vs time spent playing.
TLDR: Good game all round. Recommended Overall: In total it may take you 10hrs to play through - and I'm no speed-runner. This is both good and bad. Bad if you buy it for full price IMO, (but it goes on sale so often you don't need to!) Good because with the linear play through it's essentially the same approach each chapter, just with different scenery if that makes sense, so it can feel a tad repetitive. Also if you're like me and currently not wanting to commit to a hugely long campaign of 30hrs +, this game fits the bill quite nicely. Gameplay: It's pretty linear, each chapter goes from point A to point B with not much deviation. Basically just fight your way through. Given the release date of the game, this is somewhat expected. Graphics: The graphics hold up well enough I feel and the game ran well at 1080p. At 4K (GTX1080) it ran smoothly for the most part but did have severe stutters on occasions. Unsure what the cause was, but realistically there's no need to play this at 4K Linux: Worked instantly with Wine on Linux out of the box. (Manjaro) Controls: For me this was a bit of a gripe with the game. I have a keyboard full of keys, yet I'm forced to have multiple actions bound to one key. It's not a big deal - until it is lol.
