I'm only a couple of hours in but I already feel traumatized. If you let yourself be vulnerable and truly get immersed this game can feel pretty frickin intense. Also confusing and difficult at times, but there's something about it that keeps beckoning you for just a little bit more punishment. I play it in a dark room all alone with headphones on, my cat likes to brush up against my leg right at the most intense parts. RIP. Yes it's a slow build, but that's one of it's strengths. So far, it's not a cinematic rollercoaster like Outlast, or an all out gorefest horror carnival like The Evil Within, but it just subtly works its way under your skin and suddenly gets terrifying at random intervals. The sanity system exasperates everything. I honestly am not sure how many twists and turns await me. At this point, I won't be suprised at anything.
At first his game may appear a bit dated but once you get past the surface, you realize just how incredibly immersive it still feels. The mod "Heroes Unleashed," a 15 year passion project that overhauls the AI and adds TONS of new content, is a must. There's still a good community of fans behind this and it has quickly become one of my tops. Yes you need to look for the expansions elsewhere, but there are ways to install them to a temporary folder then move the contents over to the GOG game directory. You'll just need to google the instructions and apply a bit of patience. The game is quite enjoyable without them, especially with Heroes Unleashed.
