This game is awesome. It has great puzzles that aren't too easy, a great soundtrack, and a good artstyle. Even with all that, the story is probably the best part. The gameplay is good, although some puzzles really throw logic out of the window. They are however just the right difficulty . The story and characters are fantastic, especially Sam & Max themselves. The dialouge is genius and the plot is inspired. The graphics aren't great but the cartoony artstyle is. It really suits the game as a whole. The soundtrack isn't the best of all time but it's still good. In conclusion, this game is a must buy for adventure gamers, but also for people who want a great and funny story.
This game, while not as good as other fantastic adventure games, is still decent. The gameplay is okay, but the minigames that the game is full of are not fun, at least not to me. Having to do a puzzle that's completely disconnected from the actual world is to me not what an adventure game is supposed to be about. There is also the issue of not really having any objectives. You're just dropped in the world and the only clue is that the main character has a lost girlfriend. One of the biggest flaws of the game is that it is coded in flash. This makes the game incredibly clunky and also makes it impossible to right click. To be fair, I would probably have liked this game more if I was a more seasoned adventure gamer, but that is not where the problem with the game is. The story is minimalistic, which some people might like. I, however, did not. All truly great adventure games have fantastic stories, and I just don't feel motivated when I'm some random robot without a purpose. This lack of story is probably what, if not kills the game for me, at least damages it badly. The artstyle of the game is okay, it looks good. Everything is hand drawn and you can't really complain about the visuals. In conclusion, the game is decent, but doesn't really drag me in, due to the lack of story and immersionbreaking flash hiccups.
This game is awesome. It takes everything from Dave Gilberts other adventure game, including the stuff that is less awesome. The puzzles this time are harder than the ones in the Blackwell games, but still not that hard. If I was a more seasoned adventure gamer, the score would definitely have been downgraded to four stars, but if you're a novice, the difficulty is perfect. An addition to the gameplay are the small minigames that are decently challenging and does add something to the game. The story and characters are great and unpredictable. The story is good and avoids tropes and cliches. It's Dave Gilbert, that's all that really needs to be said. This guy is a genius. The voice acting is good, the narrator from Bastion is even in it. One thing that really saddened me was the lack of voice acting when you inspected things. While this could be understandable, since there are four characters, I really hope that they use voice acting for this in future games. It was jarring. The graphics are not the game's strongpoint but it does the job. The artstyle however is good. The graphics don't really matter anyway. They're nice to look at, that's all that matters. In Wadjet Eye's previous games, length, or shortness rather, has been a problem. While this game isn't that long, it's still longer than their previous games. I think this might be the softspot. In conclusion, this game is fantastic, and I seriously hope that we'll get a new Blackwell game soon, and that it has learned the lessons of this game, being longer than the previous games and having harder puzzles.
This game is truely unique, both in gameplay and story. However, unique does not always mean good. The gameplay consists of two parts. Walking around in an adventure game like fashion, solving easy puzzles and looking for/hiding clues. This part is fine. The other, however, is a string of QTE based minigames. This does not make for good gameplay, and basing your game on QTEs was not a good idea. They do work, but you generally just want to be done with those sections as quickly as possible. The graphics are nice, especially for its time, and I never felt like they were bad, although naked skin did look like wood, which made those scenes just a tad less good. The story and characters is, however what this game really tries to make its strong point. And while both story and characters are unique and creatively done in places, in others they follow hollywood tropes, and can sometimes be cringeworthy. That doesn't happen that often, thankfully. The story is very bizarre and often nonsecial, and by the end it's hard to make any sense of it. Entirely new concepts are thrown in your face with little explanation, things that rarely make any sense. The ending is very anticlimatic. All in all, this game may not be very good if you look at the sum of its parts, but when played it feels like a weird dream. It's just amazing how different the story can be, and I strongly recommend anyone to play this at least once. This game should probably only get one star, but thanks to the amazing time you have when you play it, it really deserves three. A good game, even though half of the gameplay is terrible.
These games are really, really good. They all have fantastically well crafted stories, characters and music, and when you start playing them it's almost like you can't stop. The story and characters are really good, if a bit cheesy at some points. Apart from that, both the plot and the characters are masterfully written, avoiding many tropes and being very creative. The music is probably the best part of the game. It is one of the best soundtracks there is, composed of jazz and some electronic music and really adds to the atmosphere, which feels great to begin with. The puzzles are good, but I have to say that they are a bit too easy if you're a seasoned adventure gamer. Even if you're not, the puzzles are in no way hard, but do require some logic to solve. The biggest problem with the games is their length. While the fourth game does remedy this somewhat, the first three can be completed in two hours each. Apart from the length and somewhat simple puzzles, these games are awesome, and I would highly advise anyone to play them, even if you're not familiar with adventure games. This bundle earns 4 stars, only being held back from perfection by the two issues I've stated. Also, get the soundtrack. Blackwell: Unbound may have the best music of any game I've ever played.
