Starship Troopers: Terran Command

A gem in spirit of the Verhoeven movie

As the title says, this game is highly based on the Verhoeven movie, with lots of hints to events and characters in the movie, but also a lot of fresh ideas like new enemy types and special troopers - which cannot be seen in the movie - later in the game. Different troop types have weaknesses and strengst against certain enemies and vice-versa. Like in the movies, there is no collecting resources or any real base building. Instead in cases of losses in you infantry you will be reinforced. Base building consists of choosing some buildings allowing you to recruit certain troop types plus building defense towers with your engineers. In some missions you will still play in larger bases, sometimes even underground. This may not sound like much of a challenge, and while the first missions are really very well doable, the tactial challenges become increasingly difficult later on. Especially some of the later missions will challenge you seriously and will likely make you struggle at least a bit. In between missions, the story is driven in a fashion very similar to the news service in the movie. Sometimes I personally found the missions a bit too stressful - on the other hand this kinda reflects the spirit of the movie as well. In the sense that in some situations no matter what you do, you cannot really control the events happening because everything just happens to fast and some of your troops will suffer. Also, some of the new enemy types annoyed me because they have a larger range than your troops with the largest range. Of course there is always an answer to every enemy type (as you can evade such attacks if you're fast enough), but this was at least a slight balancing issue to me. Overall, this game will entertain everyone very well who is at least a small fan of the Verhoeven movie and wanted to be able to actually control the run of events. Fans of the book or people expecting complex base building might be disappointed, though. "Would you like to know more?"
