This a great arcade racer, but a number of technical issues hold it back. You can't run the game higher than 30fps because it introduces control issues and visual artifacts, you can't set arbitrary resolutions, and it crashes almost as much as you will on some of the later stages. Even with all these issues I would still recommend it to those who have fond memories of playing the game back when it was originally released. It's a nice nostalgia trip and the gameplay does hold up. Newcomers may want to hold off until it gets a proper remaster.
An over the top shooter in every respect, but from the mind of John Woo, what else would you expect? Makes things interesting with lots of environmental interactions, abilities, and a score system. Some of the level design is annoying because it doesn't really take advantage of the previously mentioned systems, enemies tend to just spawn all around you at random, and the boss fight are pretty bad. Overall, an enjoyable experience. If you are into John Woo films and the Max Payne series, this is definitely worth picking up, especially on sale.
The destruction that you are able to achieve is impressive, and when doing certain mission types (like "Heavy Metal") the game is a lot of fun due to just how outrageous the mayhem can get. On the other hand, the actual on the ground combat is terribly dull, with waves upon waves of bullet sponge enemies swarming you from every direction. Even though the experience is very uneven, I would still recommend it. Definitely worth picking up on sale.
The racing itself is fun, and the special events provide good variety to the experience. However, the physics can be extremely wonky at times, meaning your car will occasionally do a backflip after hitting a cardboard box. It also means that instead of using ramps to jump in order to fill up your nitro meter, you will avoid them because you lose all control when your car hits the ground. The handling is hit or miss as well, with some cars feeling solid and others making you feel like you're driving on ice. Be prepared for these annoyances going in. Overall, if you're a fan of old school arcade racing games, Flatout 2 is definitley worth a buy, especially on sale.
