If you are looking to the screenshots and you are expecting a game in between a walking simulator and Myst, you may have the wrong idea. While the concept may be similar to the latter (a stranger in an unknown island that seems have a background history), it is actually a puzzle game, more specifically only line puzzle game. Every puzzles are about drawing a line from a start point to an end point, follow various rules in between like dividing cells of different colours, creating shapes, collecting dots and much more. You have to explore the island in which the game is set and solve every puzzles of each areas in order to activate their respectives lasers that will guide you towards the final level. While it seems to be a story, it is actually not clear what it is and it seems rather that the creator Johnathan Blow wanted to share an idea, his point of view in life, instead of providing any narration. The audiologs that the player may found contains only famous quote from scientists and phylosopher. Some FMV may be found but they are only portions of sperimental movies and documentaries. To be honest I think the game is just ok. Some of the puzzles were unnerving since it seemed like the rules of each changing without any explaination. Also there is no actual variety in them, leading soon to a sense of boredom. Instead of 600 different puzzles we are dealing with 600 iterations of the same one, I would apprecciate some difference in them. Only few of them have some interesting and creative way to solve but still we are talking of 10 out 600 puzzles. Maybe less but different puzzles would have keep the game more enganging in my opinion, making you wonder what new challenge awaits you in the next area, instead of what type of line puzzles should you solve. In truth, I don't know if I can suggest this game to anyone. If you are the type of person who like phisolophical themes you may enjoy it. For the casual adventure player, you can skip this. 7/10
Anna is a rookie FBI agent. Her first job is to investigate to a case of a missing person while, in the mean time, investigate also on her partner, Maria. And that's how much I can say.. Yeah, reviewing this game is very hard. This is the kind of game that splits the audience. Some of them will hate, others will love it. Me? Well... I guess I love it? I mean the story and the ways is told is very interesting and really engaging. I played the whole game in one sit, which doesn't mean much since it is very VERY short (I end it in 1h and 38). The way the plot develops, how it is told, the emotions that it gives. Rather than a mistery case, it's the story of Anna, what she think and how she react to hard choices. And the fact that it is done with low poly graphics and no dialogues at all tells a lot about how good the developers manage to create a truly enganging and emotional story. However that what Virginia is: an amazing story to witness. In term of gameplay there is none basically. The exploration is barebone and basically you jump from scene to scene without any notice. Few times you can interact with the enviroment but even then it is very limited. I know that it may sound harsh, but the top of interaction is available only in the main menu. So yeah should you buy at whole price? Seriously I don't know. After all it costs the same as a DVD and it gives slightly more entertainment. But I can completely understand why many gamers would not enjoy it and thinks that they waste their money. For me it's a 4/5 because I really enjoyed it and I'm glad I had the possibility to play. As for you that are reading this, well: I hope you will find the same enjoyement that I found. Otherwhise I am sorry but I can understand the reason why you won't.
Superhot is a fps shooter in which the time moves only when you move. You have to kill number of enemies and proceed to the next level. Not a very innovative idea but, thanks to the time mechanics, you can plan your move and will make you feel like a character in a Matrix movie or a John Who. There is a lot of satisfaction in punching an enemy, take his gun, shoot him in the face and repeat with the next one. In the last level you will also learn an ability in which you can shift between the enemies body. This can easily save your life and turn the situation at your advantage. The gameplay itself is funny but sometimes frustrating, especially because the enemies seems to best snipers in the universe. Also it is not clear how big is your hitbox since most of the time I was killed by bullets that looked not that close to me. So why 4 star? Because of the story! It is not actually bad but it break the pace too much. You are a gamer that receive a game named Superhot by a friend. Soon the software will start to "mess" with the player by teasing him with kind of weak treat. Every time this moment happen I was like "Can I go back shooting people?" but the game just keep you away from it. It also want you to type which it translated in reality by just smashing random buttons to form pre-created lines. If you consider that the story last barely 1 hour, this moments felt very boring. Luckly once the campaign is done you can unlock endless mode and also some challenges that will enjoy you. Overall I don't know if this game worth the full price or not because as I said the gameplay is really funny but the story pieces break the pace too much. Numerically speaking, it is a 7.5/10, so a 3 star and half in my opinion. However since GoG doesn't not allow half star, I decided to go for 4 instead of 3.
A single mother has lost his son inside a closed park. She needs to find him but what she would live in her journay will not be..... a walk in the park! I am sorry for the pun but i I had it in mind since I have start playing "The Park", and it stuck with me till the end. In fact I had just thought about this pun that the game was already over for how short it is. As the title of the review suggest, the game disappointed me. First of all, aside of few moments, it did not scared me that much as I expected. I was looking for an unnerving experience, in which sounds and visuals are the tools for create eerieness but it was barely effective due to sometimes sequences too short without any build up. The story, even if interesting in some point, it is also was quite predictable and, if you are into horror, you can see where it is going. Technically speaking it is quite good, with quite impressive graphics. I really appreciate first person games like this that actually allows you to see your full body, making you feel really inside a body and not just a floating camera. What I really liked was the voice acting: it is rare to hear such a good acting in this kind of games. The main character's voice actress is top notch and I was amazed by her talent that, for me, almost saved this rather dull experience. The way she changes tone while calling her son or during her numerous inner monologues really captured me. There are few moments in which her tone clash with the situation, but overall it is an amazing acting job. Unfortunately, the acting still can't save this game from another major problem: the lenght. The game is short, I finished it in less that 2 hours and it left me quite perplexed especially because I felt like things where finally getting really intersting. It felt like if the developers were in hurry, which explains why the scary moments are short and not very inspired. Overall I don't feel like reccomending it, at least not on full price. Wait for a price drop.
A painter in his mansion has to face the ghosts from his past. Will it defeat them, embrace the grief or be crushed by the guild? Layers of Fear is a decent horror game that failed to be a masterpiece by relating too much on known clichès and cheap jumpscares. Some said that it is an expanded version of the magnificient "P.T.". Even if it does recall it in some occassion (especially the ghost jumpscare animation which is exactley the same as the one from "P.T.), in the game credit it manages to be something on his own. I enjoyed how the house constantly morph and how the numerous rooms that the player has to explore change in a very fluidly manner, without any loading screen. It is however a mechanic that gets old very quickly. The graphics and the sounds design are damn good, giving a very eerie atmosphere which, I wont lie, made me quite nervous and tense especially at the beginning of the game. Unfortunately Layers of Fear use some scare tactics that fall short after a while. There are also some parts which were supposed to be creepy or scary but actually made me laugh so loud that one of my housemates thought I was watching some comedy. Layers of Fear is not the best horror game I ever played but it is not even the worst. I'll suggest to buy it when it is on sale or when the price get cut. Let's sound that around £7 or lower would be a good price for you to enjoy
