Warcraft: Orcs and Humans

The beginnings of a monolithic franchise

So why should you play this in the 21st century, especially since the RTS genre have left games from this era in the dust on almost all fronts. In short, watch the intro on the site, and take note of the atmosphere. If it piques your interest in any way and you have an interest in the genre then this is the game for you. Back then Warcraft, as far as I know, was only the 2nd game following the 'classic' RTS formula pioneered by Dune 2 two years prior. But nowadays that novelty has been overshadowed by the plethora of interface, graphical and design improvements of subsequent RTSs. What remains however, is a truly unique experience due to the atmosphere created by the game's unique style of art, music and voiceovers (which the intro teases). If you want to lose yourself in that kind of atmosphere then you've come to the right place. Luckily, in true Blizzard fashion, you can indulge yourself in the very beginnings of one of the most monolithic and impactful gaming franchises in the context of a mechanically airtight game that was clearly put together with great care. It's got the pre-Starcraft campaign style of 12 or so separate campaign levels (only the orc campaign is considered canon), each preceded by an awesome narrated briefing. And Warcraft lore buffs (even from WoW) will definitely recognize names and places in said briefings, as well as characters and locations encountered ingame. Even forgiving its age, the game isn't without objective cons however: the somewhat repetitive nature of the missions (most missions, though not all, are to build a base and destroy an enemy base); the predictability of the AI; orcs and humans are mostly mirrored with only magic spells and minimal stat differences between some units making the two races different; only limited drag-select of 4 units at a time. The rich and unique atmosphere, the solid gameplay and an appreciation of what the game represents should mostly counter this however.
