I just couldn't get into the story, its too whismsical and there's nothing about it to relate to. The game's mechanics are very impressive but I should've studied cause I didn't know it was some sort of time travel plot with lots of useless dialogue which I don't really have the patience for. The irony, a story about time that isn't worth my time. Maybe some people could get into it, I couldn't cause usually I like worlds that are more immersive.
This game has that cheap roadside american motel style to it but its really fun and plays well on the tropes of dumb zombie films. Mechanics of the game are pretty good but fortunately the game eases you into it, instead its more focused on zombie bashing. interface feels slightly claustrophobic, like the games we used to play on old 3:4 monitors or so
While not as free form as the original dosbox X-com of old , with Enemy Within it brings some of the brutal aspects of old Xcoms back , including base defense , terror missions and being able to break enemy's cover.. The game is very well designed around tactics and strategy : taking some ideas from the old X-coms and introducing some new interesting ones, as well as some side story missions. its kind of like X-com+ Fire Emblem. The Expansions also do a good job at expanding the original story so it gives an inspiring direction to the franchise.
I like the post apocalyptic cyberpunk influence of this game. Gameplay is good , take some getting used to and learning curve but that is part of the fun for me since its an exploration game. There are still some bugs and that is why I only give 4 stars. There are a variety of character builds possible but I think some are not as viable because of balance issues (some skills are rather useless compared to others) Overall fun game and deserves the recommendations
This is what away missions in FTL couldve looked like if the two games were combined. The game is similar to chess with most problems having a solution and each set of mechs you play with have a different style of solving these.(you can also mix these sets in a chaotic way) There is a small element of luck to the game because of the RNG but I think the game AI does a good job of getting around that in most cases and present challenges that are fair and solvable. The game also has an element of strategy : thinking how to spend or conserve resources and energy. overall highly addictive game so need to watch not to overdo it.
I will review the game in several categories while trying not give spoilers. I will also compare it to the previous title in the series (Dragonfall) because I believe that comparision is relevant to understanding what this game does good and what it does poorly. -Story: There are two stories in the game : The main story and the Extended Bonus mission. Main story : While a few side missions had a very interesting and entertaining story , the main storyline had a big problem at the center of it : I didn't care at all for the main characters in the story. Compare to Dragonfall where I got to know and love the crew and became more interested in the story as it unfolded : Here it is very verbose but ultimately about characters that I found to be less relatable : either because the story didn't do enough to aquient me with them(Edward) or because they were annoying and uninspiring (Gunshow). I'd take the crew from Dragonfall anyday and in dragonfall the game made you feel more responsible towards them. -Gameplay : Most of the missions are fun and I like the turn-based combat. The AI is not that smart on Hard diffculty and still the game poses sufficient challenge. Most missions have variation of approach which can add some replayability. I do very much like the fact that I can build whatever character I want. (was an Elf Cyber-adept on Hard Difficulty) -Art: Like in pervious titles the game is full of detailed 2d Artwork which I can appriciate ,however some illustrations fall short and I think the thing that puzzles me the most is that unlike Dragonfall : Here there are many instances where it seems the portrait artist doesn't know how to draw female faces and characters that are meant to be female have male features (And I allow myself to say this because yes, I can do better in that regard) For the rest I think the art is fine and clearly alot of work was put into it. I gave it 4 stars because while not perfect, still worth playing IMO.
