This is the Quake you know and love, but more compatible and with two cannon expansions by Machine Games. The first expansion is good, the second one is excellent - Quake has never had levels that looked this good. Downsides - no new enemies in the expansions, which is a bit of a missed opportunity. There's also missed opportunities to improve the UI, such as the video/resolution selection screen. The "pixel-doubling" video filter is a cute idea, but the resultant video resolution is much lower than Quake looked even on launch - it seems to be something like 240p. It would have also been neat to include some of the different rendering mods/filters that others have made for Quake. Still, there's never been a better way to play Quake.
When it comes to story, gameplay, music, and everything... I think this has to be the greatest Immersive Sim of all time. System Shock 2 is incredible, and Prey (2017) is near perfection, but Deus Ex just has the best overall package for me.
There are few games that I would say are "must play" due to the experiences they deliver. Alien: Isolation, Deus Ex, Prey, System Shock 2, Katana Zero, Unreal... I cound Amid Evil among them, chiefly due to the environmental storytelling and overall feeling of having a grand journey poured smoothly over rock-solid gameplay in Amid Evil. The first few worlds are interesting and fun enough, but HOLY S**T does this game ramp things up in the later levels. Everything from the Arcane Expanse onwards is just sublime atmosphere and pure exhiliarating adventure. If you love gaming in the first-person perspective, if you consider yourself a warrior -- Amid Evil is simply a must-play game.
