Overall this game has a lot of potential and is already fun concerning the campaign. I haven't played the multiplayer part yet (there seem to be only 4 maps which people in other reviews already find to few...). This game shines most with: + fine graphics (really hit the atmosphere of the Terminator setting, combat between ruins etc.) + all units in great detail, can be upgraded several times and equipped with various items and weapons + all sounds are very good + very good voice acting + campaign missons do not have a stringent quality but are exciting and fun nevertheless + story is good and carries the missons + micromanaging the fuel-, ammo- and supply trucks isn't too hard and somehow fun, I really love my trucks and that I can even put weapons on top of the truck Problematic can be: + the micromanaging of the fuel-, ammo- and supply trucks during intense fire fights, depends on the players playstyle - that some of the campaign missions may have to be played twice before getting the idea - that you really have to be patient and explore the maps carefully or otherwise you loose too many units - that you have to save often (use the autosaves and quicksaves a lot) - although the tutorials are sufficient and detailed some mechanics have to be tried out (e.g. 'air-strikes') before you really know how to use them, which results in 'trial and error' and reload of missions Some poeple in other reviews are complaining about not being able to play with resolutions above 1400 - I play with a 4K resolution (3840 × 2160) without any problems... I can recommend this game to any player who loves: * the terminator setting * having some of the original units from the movies as well as new designs (at least with the legion) * having a lot of different units for all factions with abilities to be upgraded and equipped * intense combat action at multiple spots at the same time (could be stressing) * dynamic missions that throw in new main- and subgoales at any time
I played in 09/2021 for several hours... Pro: + graphics: very good + sound: very good + narrator and other voice acting: very good + quests: very good and interesting (NOT! the usual 'fetch ten items of this kind', 'kill three creatures' etc.) + story is transported very well by the NPCs and the events that are happening + did not encounter any grave bugs so far + round based combat is good + lots of abilities, perks and attributes that are really taken into account + lots of different items, relics etc. Con: - was not yet able to use grenades by now (but that might be because I'm missing some skills or clues on how to use them) - May not be worth playing a second time as by then you already know the story (could only be interesting to see how a different type of character works) - combat has not been very tactical (mostly firing guns and keeping an eye on health and fatigue) All in all a great RPG experience that makes me want to go through the whole story and find out what is behind everything...
...and that is why I take the time to review this Arkham Horror Board Game related Adventure (it is not a real adaptation) (BTW: I'm german, so please excuse my english and any bad phrasing) I was suprised when starting the game as it was not presenting a board game related map or anything similar to the board games approach of having character miniatures, event cards and the like. So I was diving into the game somehow skeptical, but with every minute of gameplay the tight atmosphere, the ambient sound as well as the great voice acting pulled me deeper into the story. I really like the way in which aspects of the original boardgame were integrated - for example the character sheets, the loss of sanity while trying to resolve clues or fighting against enemies, the combat mechanic itself which is a great improvement compared to the original board game. I enjoy the level of detail in all rooms - they obviously put a lot of love into this aspect). The riddles are fair and mostly logical. I loved the way the developers punished my attempt to solve a riddle without considering the hints: I did something wrong and my investigators sanity got decreased. On the not so bright side I encountered a few game freezing bugs by choosing an action that could not be applied and the game wouldn't let me choose another option or anything, I could only quit and had to restart from the last checkpoint, which can get frustrating. Another bug came up when being trapped by the furniture in the room. BTW: The game only provides one save (called LastCheckPoint), luckily the save file can be found in folder "C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\AppData\LocalLow\Asmodee\ArkhamHorror" - I just copy the save folder to a backup folder from time to time or after some important fight. I could write a lot more about the game, but I think you can see that I love it and I hope that there will be more to come in the near future - at least some addons with more story, more characters, enemies and so on...
