I was born a bookish nerd, never quite the one for games despite of having them around me from a very young age. Combat, sports, racing and action without even a paragraph of reason bored me immensely. Baldur's Gate 2 changed that. It was just like the fantasy novels that I wolfed down, and even the battle mechanics failed to bore me since no action was pointless, but enjoyable and woven into the story. The game has wonderful dialog and writing which is what captured me - there is no dull moment in this game. The way it weaves in the different ways you can play and design your character especially impressed me. Only down side to this game is that any other RPG after this will feel wildly inferior. Except maybe Planetscape: Torment.
