GRIS

A Truly Excellent Game About Grief

Let's get the obvious out of the way: Gris is visually one of the most beautiful games ever created. But, it's more than just nice to look at. It has an excellent and evocative soundtrack paired by surprisingly great sound design and a wonderful wordless story about grief. The gameplay, while on its own it might not seem incredibly special, paired with its art, feels elegant and graceful and enjoyable. The game is comparably short, only about 3-3.5 hours, but in that way it doesn't tire itself out. It's an enjoyable game not just to play, but to analyze and dissect the art and how it weaves into its themes about grief and losing your voice. While personally I think it might hew a little too rigidly to the tried-and-true 5 stages, that isn't a detractor. It remains one of the best artistic depictions of grief I've ever seen. I would absolutely recommend this game.
