GAROU: MARK OF THE WOLVES

Terrible Port of an amazing game.

While less appreciated than other fighters of the era, Garou: Mark of the Wolves stands as one of the all-time greatest fighting games. The best way I can think to describe it is "what if the King of Fighters team took a shot at making a Street Fighter game?" Like the King of Fighters series, it is fast-paced and highly aggressive, but lacks the arsenal of movement options made famous by the series of team-based fighters: you have dashing/running, short hops (which are a bit less powerful than in KOF), and that's about it. No strike-invincible rolls, no hyper hops. This makes it feel a bit more "fundamental" than the King of Fighters. That being said, this port is just awful. Being an emulation of the Neo-Geo AES home console, it features nothing the original didn't feature (save for a move-list in the emulation's poor frontend, which doesn't detect all of the buttons on an Xinput controller), which means you're stuck with the rather limited training mode of the original. No recording and playback, no random blocking. I would already feel rather disappointed if those were the only issues, but this port fails at the most important part: the game itself. Emulation is just awful: frequent stuttering, and the worst audio latency I've ever seen in an emulation. Now, admittedly, I'm a snob when it comes to emulation quality, but the stuttering and audio latency is so awful in this version, even the most casual of fans will notice. Simply put, don't buy this game. If you have a console, those versions have just as limited features, but at least the game works properly.
