Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

A very well made game, tactics optional

I'm 40 hrs in at this point. and unlocked 47% of the achievements so far. It runs well, no bugs yet. Graphics, music, and voice acting so far are great. The characters are likable and the story is interesting. There are quite a few accessibility settings in the menu that let you turn off many of the annoying things many gamers hate. There is not a FOV slider though. My biggest concern coming in was the combat. I love turn-based rpgs. I love divinity original sin I and II, balder's gate 3, the banner saga, rogue trader, wrath of the rightesous, etc. I usually don't like jrpg combat as much where your team just stands on one side of the screen and the other team stands on the other. I also wasn't sure I'd care for the dodging and parrying. I find myself enjoying the combat. You can build the charcters many different ways, min/max stats to make the characters have powerful attacks and plan your abilities so that multiple characters powers synergize and do more powerful attacks, so that is good. What some people won't like is that you don't have to do any of that. If you can just learn and time the dodges, you can win every fight without strategy or thinking. Just time your dodges right and the boss will go down eventually, at this point anyway. You don't have to really think or strategize that much if you don't want to. I've played a lot of dark souls and elden ring, so I found when to dodge or parry based on the enemy animations intuitive and fairly easy to pull off. Many enemies use exaggerated wind ups just like in the dark souls and elden ring games that induce panick dodging, which causes you to get hit. It is important to wait and dodge once the attach atually begins moving forward. Again, you can build and strategize all you want, you just don't have to if you can dodge. If you don't care about that, but like the rest, you should like the game. The game seems to be worthy of all the hype and accolades it has received. There are a few annoying platforming sections that are optional, but required to get an achievement. Otherwise, every thing else about the game is excellent. I may change this to 5 stars once I finish it, but for now 4 seems about right

Cat Quest II

local co-op with your kids

This is a fun, family-friendly game. My 9 to 11 year old kids love it. Full of cat puns that the kids also like.

Shores Unknown

Great game, very polished & unique.

The game just released in early access. It is highly polished for an in development title. I like the art style. The game is very narrative heavy with lots of chances for conversation between your companions. The story is off to a great start and is probably the best part so far. There are choice and consequences as a potential companion can instead be killed if you make poor choices. The combat is turn-based, but different. Some people may have a hard time with it. I have played a few times and died horribly, then made different choices and fought the battle again and had little trouble. Have patience and you will figure it out. For some people, the combat may not be tactical enough, though I don't know what all abilities the characters will gain over time. My characters have already gained several new abilities and I am just now into the second major area. I do believe there is one fight in the early area that you have no chance winning if you stumble upon it too early. Leave it for later. I have had zero crashes or bugs. The developer is very active on their discord and has already proven they take feedback seriously by incorporating a fov slider after several requests for one. I wish all developers did this. This game is very solid right now and will only get better. It is also refreshingly unique & charming.
