The better part of Sexy Brutale is the story and mystery surrounding it - the urge to unravel what's going on. The puzzles themselves are weak - you need only one item to solve each section, at most. It felt like the tutorial never ended. The challenge is to find the item somewhere in the dozens of empty rooms that serve no purpose. The performance is a problem, too, as the game stutters frequently when quicly switching rooms - which happens a lot.
This is a very "Limbo" type of game, so this should be the first thing to consider when buying it or not. Personally, this is not my type of game, although the macabre atmosphere is masterfully crafted. But in any case I think the price is quite high for something you can beat in less than five hours.
It has an excellent and engaging story, but it gets repetitive and tiresome. There are not that many ways of tackling a mission, and there are literally hundreds of side objectives to complete which basically involve blowing something up. And you need to complete a fair bit of them to unlock better weapons and equipment.
My PC can run Witcher 3, MGSV, Arkhan Assylum and other similar and later games on steady 60 FPS, but this game constantly dipped beneath 25 with my fans sounding as if they were about to explode. That kind of ruined the experience for me. Which is a shame, because the music, environments and story seemed worthy - if only I could play it.
The main game is excellent, with colourful environments, excellent art direction and OST. I don't think I've ever seen such a well animated hand drawn game. However, the DLCs are just padding. They reuse the same levels of the main game with different characters, altering the gameplay just a little bit. And some of those are really uninspired, too. I mean, c'mon: Pajamas mode? Seriously? This should be something you unlock for free. And Beach mode? Just for the fan service? Not to mention that Shantae herself has the best moves and maneuverability. So all of the modes feel like a step down.
This is an excellent - and difficult - puzzle game. The story is engaging and has great twists, and the OST is excellent. That being said, it is pretty short and has no replay value once you finish it. So if you like puzzle games you should get it at a discount.
The writing, mystery, voice actors and setting are all great. It feels like a novel straight out of a Stephen King book. The lighting and shadow effetcs are stellar for a 2012 game, specially a console port - although the characters faces sometimes feel a little "dumb". The weakest part is the gameplay, as there's very little you can do to make it diverse. Shots don't even cause less or more damage depending on where you hit your enemies. Also, the collectibles are not worth it, and there are many. So this is more of a onetime experience.
