This game seems insanely difficult. Setting up a single 'Mech against 5 opponents in the very first mission is a bit much. I've had my 'Mech destroyed 6 times now, sometimes by 'something' firing missiles at it, sometimes by a tiny 'Mech doing a DFA attack on it, and most often by the much better equipped enemy medium 'Mech. About the AI, sometimes for no reason at all the enemy decides to disengage, and runs off in some seemingly random direction. Maybe I'm supposed to 'use' this 'feature' to attack them from behind or something, but it seems very unrealistic that a better outfitted, more healthy opponent would just walk away exposing his back (not that my paltry laser would ever get through its armor anyway). All-in-all I am very sad that I jumped to buy this game, because, well, BattleTech. But it has been more frustrating than anything else. Also, during the 'videos' the GPU ramps up to 98% (a GeForce 1080 gti, no less), and while battling it runs at about 78%, which is a lot more than a lot of better looking games load it at...

This game is difficult, but fun. You will need to read the manual to figure out what all the buttons are for; there are no tooltips on any of them, and they are not always very clear. It is also not always clear how to proceed in the game. The nice thing about this game is that even though you may lose a battle, the game is not over. It goes on regardless, which seems realistic. The first battle is a bit hard for beginners perhaps, as you will lose it if you deploy your forces wrongly (you do not know where all the enemy units will be coming from), but once you get the hang of the game it will be easier to manouvre misplaced units to the right place, without taking ages. I've had no problems running it on Windows 10 so far.
This game is a great strategy game for fans of Warhammer 40k. Yes, the graphics are outdated (1024x768 resolution), and the game sometimes slows down a lot, especially when showing tooltips. But once you have mastered all the shortcut keys, it delivers a great 40k experience. At the start, you only get to use regular space marines, but you do get to kit them out with weapons. LAter, you can also uses Terminators and Predators, among others. For people who cannot get it to work on Windows 10: Try copying 'dplayx.dll' from the windows/syswow64 folder into the chaos gate game folder (where WH40K.exe is located). This should make the game start properly.
I really loved this game. I was ill at the time it came out so I spent about 4 days non-stop playing it (which ended up killing my PS2 CD drive :). I was a very gripping game which I enjoyed immensely, even though it was a bit repetitive in combat. The number of different equipable items (as far as I can recall, 14 years later) was large though and the characters progressed interestingly. Maybe you remember a short video that was doing the rounds around the time of this game with a couple of geeky character playing a roleplaying game, and where the wizards uses magic missile to "attack the darkness"? Yup, those are characters from this game, and I believe the video came with the game somewhere too. (Just search "attack the darkness youtube") Certainly worth the small amount of money GOG asks for it.
