Ghostrunner

Excellent but challenging

In Ghostrunner you play as a half machine, half human ninja assassin. You have one goal, to climb to the top of Dharma and eliminate the Keymaster. Getting their is the problem. As the Ghostrunner you can run along walls, slow time, dodge in mid air and have sword skills to rival Raiden from Metal Gear. The levels are well designed and I was rarely lost, the combat is fast frenetic and fluid, but you can only take a single hit. The game also even though it is built with Unreal Engine has no frame stutter, it was smooth from beginning to end. It looks gorgeous with beautiful lighting and effects and well detailed environments, though they can get a bit samey by the mid-point and then suddenly get a WHOLE lot better. Now for the critical parts, starting with difficulty. I love difficult games and this could easily rival games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring for sheer challenge, in combat this is fine, no enemy placement feels cheap and when you do die there is a really quick restart as well as generous checkpointing throughout. The issue with the difficulty is that it will put some people off, though is there an assisted mode now, which makes it a little more forgiving. On top of this later challenges, especially the final boss feel more luck based than earlier levels and this is a death knell for platformer's, especially when they require heavy precision.
