Deus Ex™ GOTY Edition

Still got it

I played it all the way through when it first came out and loved. A great blend of RPG, shooter, story and strong characters. It's harder now than I remembered, but stick at it, build your JC and it comes together. It's a linear openworld game, in that it is linear, but gives you multiple ways to get through the missions and feels open. Half Life 2 pulled that off too, as did, many years later, Cyberpunk 2077, which seems a direct descendant to me. I had to use the Revision Mod, but GOG makes that easy. The game runs without it, but doesn't save or with Kentie's Launcher it will save, but won't change weapons. Revision though just works - it does make some changes to the game, but not too much I think. One of the all time greats.

The Chronicles Of Myrtana: Archolos

Excellent mod for Gothic 2

Decent story, lots of good characters and a well realised world, with good Polish voices through the extra DLC. Crafting is good. The controls are marginally better than Gothic 2, but still, it's an old game engine and a bit clunky. Deep RPG, with lots to do. Recommended.

Stonekeep

Old, but fun and it works

Old school first person RPG. It got mixed reviews in its day and I didn't get it, but picked it up on GOG years later. It works, courtesy of DOS Box. You might have to run the sound configuration. It's a hard game and can be baffling early on. Top tip, the roots are a little healing. Equip the bag of stones to get auto loading. Look closely at the walls... Save often. It's a game that creeps up on you and it's easy to give it just another few minutes...

Cyberpunk 2077

One of the truly great games.

Cyberpunk is so impressive from start to finish. It's a story laden RPG with great worldbuilding, really immersive, deep and different characters. There's lots to do and plent of choice in what to do or not to do. The graphics and sound are terrific. The music fits the genre. Phantom Liberty is just more of the same. If there's a downside it's that playing back through the main story and the many side missions isn't as gripping second time around, though build a different character and your experience does change. It's a game that shows how far computer gaming has come.

Cyberpunk 2077

Really good game in 2023

I got it in 2023, so well into the later patches by then. As it is, it's a very good game. A cross between Deus Ex and Grand Theft Auto x. The story is good, side quests too, though some are samey. Missions are kind of linear, but there's plenty of choice in how you resolve them. And if you want, you can just ride/drive/run around Night City and its environs causing mayhem or being a good citizen. There's plenty of room for RPG, choices, character development and your interactions with others seem well constructed and their characters well developed. The fate of leading chracters matters, unless you lean towards the sociopathic. The whole Jonny Silverhand thing I thought would suck, but actually it works well. My PCs are old. I play it on a fx6300 with rx570 and fx8350 with rx580. Plenty of RAM in both. The game runs well. I've only had one fuzzy slowdown, but that resolved after and 10 seconds. I don't doubt that it would look better and be smoother with a new powerful PC, but it's great that they optimised it well enough for laggards like me.

Necromunda: Hired Gun

Crashes at launch

I meet the system specs, just. fx6300, r9 270x, 24gb RAM, Win 10 Pro. The video plays OK, then the game crashes as soon as I press Enter. Every time. Otherwise I have a stable PC. So I don't know if the game is any good if you could actually play it, because I can't actually play it.

Crysis®

Doesn't work in Windows 7 with an fx CPU

Was a great game in Windows XP and I can run it in Windows 10. But it just crashes before launch in Windows 7.

Forgotten Realms: The Archives - Collection One

Great game, then and now

Absolutely brilliant. I loved this back in the 90s and the GOG revitalisation works perfectly. It runs on DOSBox, all automated and fills my 1366x768 screen. A mouse is much better than touchpad. The game is D&D, with lots of dungeon crawling. Of course by todays standards it's all a bit clunky, but it still provides escapism and that classic D&D group experience. There's almost no sound, never was. The graphics are colourful and functional. Movement is real time, but by squares. Speech and conversation is through text. Create your party, and head off to the Temple of Darkmoon to rescue your friend's missing scout. There's evil afoot. Watch out for hidden doors!
