There is even a somewhat active community alive (tauniverse.com) where are still plenty of mods to be found and an unofficial patch which is more like an upgrade since today's computers are far more powerful. Some examples: upping the max unit capacity from 200 to 5000, increasing pathfinding cycles so large armys move more efficiently and high res fixes.
