Clive Barker's Undying

A nice surprise, didn't expect it.

Never heard of the game itself, but when i saw it on gog discount i thought '' let's give it a try'', and i wasn't disappointed. Really entertaining horror fps with story written by no others that Clive Barker, it mixes horror clichè with some nice surprises and a strangely addictive gameplay, with both a wide variety of guns and magic However, you character is far from invincible, with a shaking camera every time you get hit and some immortal eneis, the game keeps the player on its toes. So, to summarize, enganing horror/ mystery story( almost tipical movie/book plot written in the 90'), with some good gameplay and a feel of tension while walking through the mansion and other places you ll visit throughout the game. So yes, totally worth it ( even if you are not a fan of horror games).

MDK

Not my kind of game, but..

Little of a cult classic, MDK surely stand up in the crowd for its unique style and entertaining gameplay, even for someone who isn't a fan of the genre like myself. Amazingly enough, although a little rusty around the edges, it can be played even by a more modern generation of gamers and still be on point, thanks to gameplay and ageless humor that truly consecrates it into the classic.

Alien Rampage

Unknow good game!

Classic hidden gem, Alien rampage plays surprising well even for today standards. With frenetic gameplay, iconic background and visual design easy to recognize, it comes with a surprise that this game is Unknow by many in its own time. As 2d sidescrolling shooter with some interesting if not clever addition to the gunplay, with multiple types of projectiles and the possibility to aim whenever you want, it delivers some good fun and challenging but without real frustration thanks to well design checkpoints. The only true downside is the absence of background music, however, this can be explained by the fact that the developers were trying to recreate an alien world, and give a sense of estrangement (or alienation... sorry) to the player. All in all, worth the price and the time, if you are ready for the rampage!

Lands of Lore™ 1+2

Lands of lore saga is astonishing!

A must buy in every game library, lands of lore 1+2 are magnificent games that truly show quality and substance I've rarely seen. Speaking about the single episodes themselves, I must admit that while the first one is truly a timeless masterpiece with its dungeon-crawling gameplay at its finest, spectacular graphics ( truly it surprises me while I was seeing its wonderful cinematics), simple yet engaging with a clear goal, well design maps, fun puzzles, and a full party to play with, the second one tries to expand on that ideas but removes the party in order to promote a single hero for its story, with multiple ending and way larger maps. But I must admit, it does that with mixed results, and I personally found it confusing both in its design and gameplay, and overall, to be less fun compared to the first entry of the saga. However, like the first one, lands of lore 2 must, at least, be trying out just for experience what game has to offer, just for the experience in which the second episode is all about to exploration, with absolutely no hand holding or any form of help, even discovering how an item works is fascinating. My whole experience with this saga was about to discover how the game works, running around its enormous maps and trying out spells and items. Overall, A must buy for every player that loves old school RPGs and dungeon crawlers at their finest, and a true masterpiece that, in its prime, was simply on top of almost all its competitors, and still you can play it today and, truly, be still amazed.

Realms of Chaos

unexpected great platformer from Apogee.

I must admit, didn't think much about it when first I bought it, and yet it surprised me with good pixellated graphics( for its time), some good tracks (not all of them but still), good and simple gameplay with some non-linear levels and even more interesting boss fights. of course, sometimes the movement and attacks of the main character and others can be stiff, but that was a shared problem with other game of its time. Overall a good experience, its simplicity and yet engaging gameplay is probably one of the reasons i appreciated the game so much, showing the prowess that was famous apogee to put in its platforming games. Prepare for a journey of two brothers against a realm deep into the claws of chaos!

Crusader: No Regret™

Absolutely no regret in buyint it!

Crusader: no regret is the sort-of expansion pack of the crusader saga (it continues with the story of the magnificent crusader: no remorse... but I found difficult to call it a sequel) and has a lot of problems, such as camera angles and stiff controls, especially when the gameplay requires to be precise and as fast as possible... and still is satisfying, engaging and a blast to play. True, I loved the first chapter and I happen to find it superior to this successor, still, the sequel (or expansion) adds new features to this isometric shooter ( which still remains unique in its style, or at least I never found something similar ), such as new guns and new, innovative items, that really surprised me add versatility to the inventory. However, Crusader: no regret brings the balance of the previous mix of shooter and strategic thinking more towards pure pump action, which may be at odds with stiff controls and horrible camera angles. Still, if you want just pure action and a 90' throwback with Live-action cutscenes, Crusader: no regret won't disappoint, you will buy it with no remorse. ( damn it)

Fantasy General

Simple, and yet challenging.

Some good ol' hex-tactics game right here, it's easy to understand, even for newcomers of the genre and even manages to be challenging ( at least for my personal level of skill in this kind of games). Some minor issues with camera control but overall solid gameplay, from managing your army (be careful to not lose too many troops or it will become impossible to go on) to the engaging battle, that could have used a bigger or more detailed map, but at the time I think it was not possible. Not a masterpiece but still a game that can be picked up even today and play surprisingly well.

Shadow Watch

Surprisingly good, fully enjoyable today

Brought the title without any knowledge other than the picture showed in the store, and was not disappointed. Shadow watch is the classic example of ''Videogaming gems that nobody has ever heard of'', with a surprisingly good feature that gives me doubt of how this game was completely ignored by the great public. Shadow watch's gameplay is a good combination of stealth and tactical turn-based combat, with a good amount of different path and mission that allow solid replayability. The story ( based on a novel of tom clancy) serves to give purposes to the missions and nothing more, but still feels enjoyable and ''fresh'', even for today standards, while the graphics are surprisingly astonishing with their ''90' comic'' look. However, can get repetitive after a while, with only a limited pool of characters to choose from and a few types of enemies. Still, even if you are not a fan of turn-based combat, I think Shadow watch is worth your money, and if you liked ''Invisible, inc.'', this one is totally for you.

Anachronox

Good, but truly not more than that.

Before you read this, I didn't play this game when it came out. So I think I played without nostalgia glasses and, at the same time, didn't enjoy in ''its prime time''. Besides that, I guess the best review I can come up with is ''it's ok''. I would say that the most attractive part of the game is the story, with some funny dialogue, some good twist and a little pool of well-written characters (and it isn't ''astonishing'', it's good but felt like it could have been more). Instead, regarding gameplay mechanics and overall look, it's average. Not to dismiss it as ''bad'' but the effort that Ios storm put it in the game didn't match the general ''output'': slow gameplay, sometimes too simple or straightforward (besides the IMMENSE backtracking this game, sometimes, forces you to do, which slows it even more) My personal opinion is that after Daikatana failure, Ios storm (or Romero) wanted to try something more ''safe'' and came up with Anachronox. In the end, would I advise to play it? yes, if you like turn-based RPG ( or jrpg, or at least I felt like it was one) with some different mechanics than the norm, all mixed with some good dialogue and story (for the most part). If you don't like this particular genre, I would say: give it a chance, but prepare yourself for a long walk (literally, my half gameplay time was spent by only walking!)
