Jazz Jackrabbit Collection

Aged badly but still enjoyable.

Jack jackrabbit is one of the most notorious clones of sonic the hedgehog that brings to the table action-packed gameplay with a beautiful soundtrack that really rocks. However, the game has aged poorly and now it just feels old, and that without taking into consideration camera controls, stiff controls and whatnot. still, it should be worth buying since is one of the most famous platformers on pc, and even today, if you can overlook all its problems, it can be still fun and enjoyable.

Mable & The Wood

Good Idea, poor execution.

Mable & the wood could have been something great, the idea behind it is solid and the fantasy landscape, at least in theory, could have worked. Unfortunately, the gameplay, some part of design and overall execution of the story doesn't give justice to the idea behind it. A shame, it could have been great. Still, for all Metroidvania lovers out there, looking for something fresh, this could be for you. Just wait for a discount.

Anodyne

Basically, it is decent.

Anodyne plays with nostalgia with gameplay clearly inspired to old Zelda's games and with a story that reminds me somewhat of earthbound, with surreal themes and some oniric maps. Its major points are exploration and some boss fights ( few of them actually) Beyond that, the game, after 2 hours of playing it, becomes extremely repetitive and bland, with a narration that most of the time is a little pretentious. However, if discounted and if you are a fan of this kind of game, sure why not?

Quake II

FPS at its finest, a golden milestone.

There ain't much to say when talking about quake II: it is simply 3D FPS at its finest. Although of all the series I personally prefer the first entry for its strange and unique settings, Quake II is absolutely perfect in every single way: interesting design of enemies, weapons and overall style, addictive and without flaw gameplay, even the story (which is not something you would consider) it adds perfectly to the other features of this game. I won't spend any more time describing the features or what kind of impact this game had on the whole videogame industry.... But I will say this: its an instant-buy, a masterpiece must-have in every single library, for every single player.

Alien Breed + Tower Assault

complex and labyrinthine , yet still fun

Difficult to rate this one: they both are pearls from the past, so if you are a fan surely it's worth, but the gameplay has aged rather badly (it's still fun, but not for a long play), plus the method of saving the game is truly annoying, considering you have to restart a level without any power-ups or keys. So, two good top-down shooters (the first is subdivided in mission, the other with a map interconnected, way more fun and way more confusing) that if you give them time, can bring some action-packed fun.

Quake 4

the weakest of the series... still fun!

Quake VI is an FPS born from the 2000 era of video gaming (that I personally hate) and it shows in its gameplay and design. The game, compared to its predecessors (not takin in consideration Quake III for obvious reasons) is well behind them, with a really slow intro ( you need to wait until a certain plot point before starting to really enjoy it) and shallow design: basically they taken the interesting design of the second title and make it bland, uninspired. The story is completely forgettable and sometimes even annoying, but that's not really why one plays these games, so you can give it a pass. However, after that kind of long ''intro'' said before(basically when you start to be alone against the enemies and without companions), the game starts to show the classic gameplay and feeling of a true ID software game, for most parts. So, do I recommend it? yes! absolutely, even being the weakest of all the other Quake, it is STILL a Quake!

Forgotten Realms: The Archives - Collection One

I mean... If you know them, you buy them

Eyes of the beholder I - II - III are basically the quintessence of old school RPG, the grandfathers of CRPG genre, their features are literally foundations for all first-person RPG games out there that don't involve shooting. I know its pretty simplistic to say but their graphics, gameplay and level design are masterpieces that transcend time. You can even play Eye of beholder I with different graphic and sound settings, make you relive the old classic as you experienced them. For all the newcomers, just three useful info, there s no automap (so take notes), prior knowledge of 2nd D&D edition helps a lot and these games are relatively hard, but Goddamn it's worth it.

Descent

Quite the experience!

Must say, Descent mixes fps and space battle simulator and it does that spectacularly! Fighting enemies from all the direction take a lot to be accustomed to, but it's worth it. It gives you a new perspective and when it came out, Descent was quite unique in its time and still, today can be quite enjoying and feel fresh to play too. However, the maps may be confusing and finding even the simple cards or exits can be quite frustrating sometimes, but actually the game does give you ways to finish the level. So, yes, quite intriguing and fun!

Another World: 20th Anniversary Edition

3 star only for the overall design....

unfortunately, some games ages pretty bad and Another world is one of them, maybe even a primary example of it. It offers unique ( at least for its time) gameplay that rewards the memorization of enemies and traps patterns over.. well, fun. Basically it put memory over skill, and if that has gone well in the past since it was a unique experience, in today's standards it's simply horrible. On the other hand, the method used to tell the story, art, and overall design is truly amazing and it stimulates you to complete it, but even that can't stop the frustration and boredom. However, still worth it to check it out as one of the videogame history masterpieces (for its time), at least to experience the feeling to be stranded in an alien world (the game doesn't tell you anything, which is actually good for the story in general). On the side note, it is worth to buy it just to see how far this industry has evolved.

Eradicator

never heard of it but surprisingly good

Eradicator is an obscure FPS of the 90' era that offers gameplay (and gunplay) similar to its big names of the same genre, but with interesting implemented puzzles, objectives and creative gameplay. on top of that, the game offers probably the most unique variety of guns both in function and feelings, and it offers theme in abundance (i think it is safe to say that Eradicator it's the fps that offers the most numerous numbers of guns of all time? I played almost all of the doom-like( 90' fps) and fps in general, and I have never see such abundance). In addition, it also offers 3 different characters with different starting levels, and also said characters have different guns! ( Gun-inception!) Downsides? the game graphics are really old (actually, it goes beyond outdated), final cutscene needs working with the dos box in order to work and the levels are simply too dark in general. Still, completely worth it since it offers some very unique gameplay and approach to this genre.
