METRO QUESTER

What is the point?

It's a passable enough crawler, and I do enjoy Hagi as much as the next Gen-Xer who grew up waiting for Bastaad!! every month. But where is the creamy center? The setting and story for this game is basically just a few cliff notes and some non-essential item flavor text. The character interactions are generic randomized intros. Beyond that - it's just the art and starting item configuration - that's it. I don't see a reason to develop the characters you meet either - the starting team can handle anything as long as you use basic logic. I just don't understand what the reward is supposed to be - where is the motivation to pull the player forward? Where is the adventure? Where is the "soul" - the writer's creative core? It is an incredibly dry, basic project, unless I am missing something. I expected quite a bit more to be honest.

SHENZHEN I/O

Enfuriating

and delightful .

Cosmic Star Heroine

Simply fanstastic

No gimmicks - but a true classic RPG with some very thoughtful design tweaks. In the direction department, the characters are likeable and lifelike. Thje dialogue, even for the background NPCs, is not clicheed and fills out the world nicely. The story pacing is playful and lively, without self-referential loreholes or endless belaboring tirades. The music is quite good and cutscenes are frequent and enjoyably cinematic. In the game design department, the core system is good. Unique and with enough depth but not overwhelming or opaque. The enemy encounters do not repeat almost at all. I mean, it is like Dark Souls wher the game doesnt make you face the same problem twice. There is no grinding or annoyance anywhere - every decision has been thoughtfully made to use your playtime well. Efverything is handcrafted, hand placed and adjusted to feel just right. Every NPC is unique, every piece of scenery, every enemy encounter - there is no redundancy - just a groovy flow of RPG adventure exploration story and combat well combined. It is very nice to see people can and do make such a game these days: lovingly built from basic principles and talent to just be a fun, solid, classic RPG experience.

WARTILE

Pretty interesting but kinda soulless

It's a kind of fun idea for mechanics - everything else is just passable. LIke, you can't really criticize it but it's very apparently just compliance.

Venetica - Gold Edition

Classic good times

Unpretentiously creative and fun, easy as fuck, and the MC is a cutie. Just enjoy a classic chosen one story well done, and the good world-building and art direction. The sound could use a little bit polish in levels but everything else is very nice. Art-wise, this is obviously done without normal baking so you'll be seeing pretty much the peak of what raw low-poly asset design can give. Also the work they put into things like transparency and cloth mechanics for this age it turned out relaly nice. And the stylization in the sculpting is not to be ignored as well. Most of the armor designs are a bit ridiculous but whatever, theres definitely a nice concept layer underneath all the assets and levels. Like I said this is no dark souls so just chill back and enjoy the ride, it's a fun time.

Higurashi When They Cry Hou - Ch.2 Watanagashi

Dont forget to air out your futon

Mion was already my favorite after Ch.1, and her being on the cover of this one had me looking forward to more of her awesomeness. Well, in more ways than one it is here. In short, the warning about the difficulty being rather high is quite fair.

Ostriv

It is like other games, but IT IS NOT

It feels authentic and immersive. Things make SENSE. And it is very ... "earthy". There is a sense of effortless accuracy without complicating things too much. And you get to watch your little town grow, but it grows slowly, it is a living thing and each step is slightly different. Oh, and there's a detail that is very interesting: things don't appear out of nowhere just because you paid money. Everything has to be grown or built. When you build a chickencoop - it doesnt come with chickens: you have to import them from a neighboring town. But once you have chickens, you can always make more :) You can build a plow but it doesn't come with live oxen, you have to get oxen, duh. It's great. Anyway, this game holds quite a few pleasant surprises and is very original and enjoyable. HIghly recommend.
