It’s a massive game, has a good story, equally or better side missions, amazing characters, pointless starting careers/background, very fun combat system and mechanics, poorly done animations and lack of open world interactions, and a beautiful fully detailed world. Basically the base game is there, and would have been fine if there wasn't an open world, or released as an open beta. The game didn’t meet the hype, and didn’t do anything particularly groundbreaking that would be remembered like the Witcher 3. It was released unfinished, lacking assumed mechanics that come with open worlds, and plagued with bugs. Despite the negatives, and disappointed expectations, I massively enjoyed the game. The game's level design, detail, and narative shows the devs point real solid effort into this game, but time and money was against them. I'm not certain if the game will be become more than it is now, and I cannot trust official statements considering the game's state. The game wasn't ready. I'm replaying the game mostly to try a new build, because the combat is new and fun to me.
The game's combat mechanics are too simplified. The character classes are too streamlined. I liked making my own builds, choosing stats, perks, masteries, and skills. The DnD influences are there because of other BG games, heritage, not because it's better. From reading the forums of different platforms, the concensous of most is that the game isn't DnD enough, and needs to conform to 5e rules more. That reason is why I refunded the game, as I don't see it changing to a progression and combat system I would enjoy. There's just too many voices wanting the opposite of DOS type of systems. One of the most complained mechanics is the ground surfaces, a staple of DOS interactive combat. If you are like me, don't get this game, as the complexity is gone, for more simple and faster combat. If you are a DnD fan, or don't mind a move away from DOS mechanics, then maybe try it.
