Powerslide

A grimy wasteland ride

I will admit I did not play this when it came out. So for me, this is a fresh experience. This is a game that originally came out in 1998, and it definitely looks like a product of it's time. So I will not fault it for visuals, or overall lack of polish. In fact, aside from mouse stuttering issues in the main menus, the game runs extremely well, and is very easy to pick up and play. One thing I will say though is this is best played with a controller, or a racing wheel if you have one. I personally played this with an XBOX One controller. After some basic remapping, which was not difficult to do, the game controlled extremely well. Do not use the default controller configuration though! And I say it's better to use these sorts of controls over a keyboard mainly due to the more precise steering. That said, overall, this is a decent little title. Very grimy looking with an overall dark aesthetic representative of the wasteland setting that takes place in the game. Music is all over the place with various experimental sounds fusing various genres ranging from industrial to electronic to even some crazy banjo music on one track. It all seems to fit the motif well. Nothing really stood out with the music overall, but none of it was distracting either, which is good. So what about the actual gameplay? What about the racing? Well, this is where the game sort of falls short for me. First and foremost, it is definitely an arcade style racing game. Which is fine. It's also an off road racing game. Also fine. My main issue is that the game has an overall slippery feel to it. I guess maybe this game was called Powerslide because that is what you feel like you're doing in every turn, even when you don't want to. I mean it's not a bad thing, but it's not exactly great either. Also the tracks themselves while looking nice come off as rather boring and uninspired. Overall, it's not a terrible game. But it's definitely far from other great racing games of this era.
