This is a really good game, but gog version doesn't make justice to it. It is basically a copy of Age Of Empires, if you have played AoE all is so familiar, the controls, UI, resources to collect, armies to build, enemies to defeat, walls and towers to raise, technologies to develop... Unfortunately there is also some frustration while playing it, especially on two things: pathfinding and AI. The pathfinding is bad. If you have 20 soldiers of the same type and you want to group to have a compact unit to engage the enemy, it's nearly impossible to do so, you have to select one by one your soldiers and try to group them. This is a big loss of time, and you CAN'T loose time on this game, you have to be really quick to be competitive. Add to this big flaw, that if there is some enemy near, your soldier(s) will try to catch him (sometimes even if you have halted them), resulting in a big mess. In this game would be great (and necessary) to put your archers behind your soldiers, use this kind of tactics, but it's nearly impossible to do this. Also the AI isn't the best, for example if they get out of resources, they send their peasants to explore and collect more, even if that means try to cross your lines and get destroyed again and again. The thing is that there was a nice version on the Spanish market, launched by FX Interactive, which patched and solved some of these problems (or at least minimized them). It included some nice expansions aswell (Gengis Khan, King Arthur, and the reigns of Magic - these expansions turned the game into a bit more-RPG, were really great). I've played lots of hours to these expansions 15 years ago, and they hadn't these flaws. There is no hint of where all these awesome content has lost. Hope they update it with this patches and campaings some day.
The first commandos and his expansion were great, but is in the second episode when the game acquires a whole new dimension: Each character has his own inventory/backpack, each one could perform common actions like drive, swim or stun an enemy, so the tactics to solve the missions are multiplied by x1000. You could go stealth, or with more quick action, especially with the green beret and an MP40, or the sapper with grenades... The pretty good interiors also add lots of depth to the game. The scenarios are awesome even nowadays, with awesome level of detail in the textures, high quality enemy animations... The Colditz castle, for example, is probably one of bests maps/levels I've ever played on a videogame. Nearly all missions have big reminiscences of classic WWII films, so playing this game is like to be in a classic movie. The OST and voice acting are amazing. The bonus missions add more hours to the game trying to explore each furniture of the levels just to unlock them (10 little missions more added to the 10 big ones). The difficulty levels allow everyone to enjoy this game (even you would need your quicksave/quickload keys pretty much). A truly classic masterpiece and the best game in Commandos saga. About Commandos 3, even that is pretty similar, is a smaller, quick-combat oriented game, so isn't nicer as 2. The time limit sometimes just add not necessary pressure on the gameplay, and they reduced the number of commandos (there is no Driver, no female spy, no dog), no bonus missions... a good game, but not great as the second one.
One of best "tycoon" games ever made. You could develop your ships and "your" towns the way you prefer, and expect a high competency for the profits. Once you are tired of being a merchant you could also try to be a pirate. But your decisions could bring you the public shame. The gameplay is insanely addictive, every minute you want to ship a convoy of goods, build a new ship or try the random missions and characters that you could get in the tavern, all of them very interesting but maybe not so rewarding. The graphics and visuals are delicious even nowadays. As 2D never get old, you could apprecciate all the details in the boats, cities and so. Also the UI is pretty well designed and you have all the info you need when you need it. If you like the idea to trade between historical cities and you like tycoon-kind games you definitely should try this game. A true masterpiece with tons of hours of fun.
If you like Warhammer 40.000, you will LOVE this game. A magnificient tactical game based on the 40k universe and very replayable. In the campaign you can choose which regions to attack, different regions have different resources, so a early bad choice would compromise your entire campaign. The armys are amazing, both Imperial and Orks are quite well represented, with units from "common" Space Marines to Leviathans, land speeders, rhinos, predators... you can build your armies like in the table game, taking care how to use the points available for different scenarios. In some battles you'll need a quite strong tank battleforce, in others many quick units, taking a well compensed army not always means victory.. I have to say this game has a very good learning curve, the beginnings are easy, but later on there are very HARD and challeging battles and you'll cry for your units. Graphics are quite nice nowadays, the 2D perspective and animations still so enjoyable 20 years later after release. With some fancy FMVs and good sound effects. The OST is awesome!!! Codex is quite good as well. I had few problems to run the game on Windows 10 64 bits even in a virtual machine with Windows Xp 32 bits. Fortunately the support here on gog is good and tried few solutions until was completely stable. (Had to disable FMV intros renaming them).
Fallout Tactics is a superb game. Don't expect a Fallout 3rd game, instead it turns all to combat, but in complete Fallout-style: UI, ost, ambientation, skills, dialogues... it's not an RPG, is a tactical turn strategy game, but has enogh depth to really enjoy it. Your squad has to be equilibrate with enough amount of skills (not just combat-skills): lockpick, pilot... are also important. Your squad is brought to different missions and you can resolve them as you want: Brute force (not recommended at high difficulty levels), a more subtle approach... it's up to you, and it's quite interesting to use the members of your squad as it should: snipers flanking, assault troops in front, doctor ready to cure the wounds... if you like games like X-com, Jagged Alliance, Gorky17 (the inventory screen is IDENTICAL in this game)... you will enjoy Fallout Tactics A LOT.In later-game the vehicles take part and bring more different strategies, improving the capacity of your tactics. As by the performance, I play in Win10 without compatibility mode and no crash or flaws. Good job Gog! A truly tactical jewel and the last excellent Fallout-game.
This is one of best strategy games of all times. If you enjoy the turn-based combats, where you have to calculate in detail the action points (Time units in here) for all your units, this is your game. Also the development of alien technologies, creation of new guns and equipment, the progression and equipation of your squads (it hurts A LOT when a captain or coronel is defetaed in combat), the terror missions... all in this game is amazing and is extremely well balanced. In result lots of fun playing it with some random events as well, the game is sooooo replayable. The ost is just a marterpiece. Played with Openxcom (truly recommended) the game supports lots of mods and makes the game infinite, along with the improvements in the UI, graphics and more. Have waited a lot to buy this on gog (didn't want to purchase steam release) and now finally the wait is over. Prepare to reduce your social life to minimal expression with this game. "Just one more turn", "just one more day"
Tropico - the first one- still one of my favourite tycoon games of all times. All in this game have that amazing tropical flavour, the menus, the magnificient OST and for sure, the gameplay. Tons of hours awaiting in this game. The background of our character (El Presidente) has many effects. Alcoholic, Fascist, Ezquizofrenia, Hysteria, Women-Lover, are just few examples of how amazing we can be. This is the place to be politically wrong as we want/can. Inflate our Swiss bank account is just one of options at our disposal. Make a communist banana republic, a tourism paradise... it's all in our hands. But specially gratifiyng is smash our people with some military power and make our own dictatorship we the agreement of our army and take out just the rebels who complain about you. You should try it!! As financial and political game is just Brilliant: We have many many options to progress in the way we want. Specially chatastrofic are the hurricanes, tornados... they can make our paradise just a hell. And they hurt, a lot. I've never really played in-depht Tropico 2, probably a better game, but IMHO without the "magic" and the extremely well performed ambientation of TROPICO. As for the performance, no issues on Windows 10. Just perfect. Definitely a must have.
Heroes III is one of those games that you never can get tired of it. I remember playing the original Restoration of Erathia 15 years ago, taking the tutorial and get pissed off one time after another, until I got a bit in deep into the game and learned the mechanics. Since then I’m still hooked and have to replay it one time and another along the years. Combats are like an awesome chess-playing where every unit counts, even the smallest, counts. There is no place for just brute force, you have to be smart and in every battle you learn something useful for the next. The complete version is a ton of hours of fun. Their campaigns (Shadow of Death is absolutely brilliant and the best part of game I think) are awesome. The system to level up your heroes, secondary skills, completely different type of towns with completely different kind of strategies to use, makes this game infinite. You can create a hero might-focused with all pure combat skills – artillery, archery, offense, armorer…, or you can create a powerful magic hero, with all the magic academies and all spells, intelligence, sorcery… It’s your choice and is amazing to level up a hero trough the entire campaign. And even learn some powerful spells like Town Portal, Dimension door or Fly, those completely break the game as no enemy could resist that. With the HD mod you could enjoy the game in actual PC’s. I’m playing in a 12” Intel Atom, 1GB of RAM, with an Intel integrated graphics card, Win7 32bits and is awesome. The mod also fixes some bugs and has minor but useful tweaks like recruit all the creatures of the town with one click. There is also an awesome multiplayer (I’ve never played as I’m a big noob) and a mod like Hota, that adds a new campaign, new heores even a new town (Pirates)… Buy It, it completely worth every single penny on it.
NATO sends a group of elite soldiers to see what happens in a small city in Poland. There are rumors that the city is going the same way than Gorky 17, a secret Russian city that was destroyed. Another commando has disappeared without a clue. Now is our turn to discover what is happening. Our 3 main guys are very nice characters. The leader, Sullivan, has the leadership and takes the command in worst situations. Ovitz, a polish Green Beret, is the translator and first he doesn’t like Sullivan, but he will change his mind. Trantigne, is the youngest and inexperienced character, but he will learn quick under Sullivan’s command. As soon as you get in the city and start to explore, you’ll get in combat. Combat is like a chess game where every character, every weapon and every enemy has its own range, and you’ll learn how much tactical turns the game in here. There is always a quick and easy way to solve the combats, but, you’ll spend some time to find it. There are LOTS of battles in the game, LOTS of enemies, and SMALL amount of ammunition. This is where the survival component takes place. You have to train your group to close combat situations too unless you want to get out of ammo. Don’t take too damage as food and healing items are also limited. Characters also level up abilities. The exploring component is great, with few easy to solve puzzles, and good hidden items, like a character in Museum’s roof. About graphics, the game aged quite well. Backgrounds look amazing, and the 3D characters and enemies still quite nice. About performance, I play in a 12” Notebook with an Atom, 1 GB RAM and an Intel card. No bugs or issues or crashes. Perfect. Weapon sounds could be better but voices and acting are amazingly well performed and the music is a good OST in general, putting some tension on you. This game is a perfect combo of a survival adventure with very tactical combats and some RPG features, with an interesting main story, good graphics and good music. 10/10
