Fallout: London One-click Edition

No place like London

The short version is that Fallout London is a great and terrible experience. The long version is that the mod is a marvel in terms of existing. The fact that the team actually finished a full overhaul of Fallout 4 is incredible, must have been a nightmarish undertaking, and I would never dream of diminishing that. And believe me, this does not feel like Fallout 4 with an English paint job. This feels genuinely different. You can have a lot of fun with London, and I certainly did. There's fun and unique weapons and armour, hundreds of locations to explore, collectibles to find, and more I won't mention. But there's a few problems. The first is that the mod is very performance intensive, much more so than Fallout 4 itself, and the load times can be extreme. And you can expect crashes and hard freezes. Specifically, the intro and ending videos both froze for me, and I had several crashes alongside that. The second, larger issue, is that the writing of the story leaves a lot to be desired. I won't spoil anything, but you can make a reasonable guess very early on and watch your character (despite having the same information) never make the connection themselves. That may not sound like a huge issue, but it's one of the things that drives the plot forward. The factions have a similar issue. There's not much depth or nuance to them, and most of them never interact with each other or matter in the grand scheme of things. I know it's free, and for what it is it's incredibly impressive, but the groundwork here is laid for something much better that just doesn't come to fruition.
