This game have received a lot of praise over the years, and I enjoyed it as well. Still, there's some flaws at this game. Basically, it's a space shooter, and a great one as well. it never gets too complex, most of the missions is just "shoot the bad guys and make sure we don't get hurt"... One problem is the overall universe and plot, which is narrated some extremely boring briefings, that you will want to skip instead of plowing through long pages of space-military-blah blah forever. Other than that, pretty nice game, and do yourself and install FSopen, that will improve the graphics radically, and give you the opportunity to play new campaigns.
It's really great to see that indie games are enjoying so much success, especially games like Cave Story and this one, both free games, and both very well done. TAG is platform jumping game with a lot of exploration involved; you are free to explore the world around you, and you are expected where to go next. Sometimes it can get confusing, and I looked in a walkthrough now and then. Apart from that, it's a pretty easy game compared to old school platformers like Super Mario Bros. or Metroid. The finest thing about TAG is the compelling and funny story, that easily competes with much more advanced games on the market. I had a great time playing the game, and was intrigued by the original mood and story. If you're into retro gaming, you're bound to love this, everyone else should give it a try too.
The second game in the Carmageddon is nice enough; some things have been improved, but it is not nearly as good as the original. First of all, the gameplay has been seen before; you can drive recklessly through the city, running over pedestrians and being a complete psychopath, but the shock value is not there anymore, if you've tried the original. Second, the graphics are too sleek, too nice, where the first game had a wonderful, writty and grotesque. While C2's graphics are better on a technical level, it is not better on a aestetic level. Third, and worst, is the handling and gravity with the car. This game feels more like driving on rail, while the first game had a very realistic approach to driving (and crashing) that were way ahead of its time. In short, don't play this game unless you really have to: You've played the original Carmageddon back and forth several times.
Yeah well... I saw the graphics, and read about how the games changes whether you play heavy metal or classical music... It doesn't! Whatever music I play, it's the exact same gameplay. Things can go a little faster if the tempo is high, but there is absolutely no different between a quiet and a loud song. The gameplay? Use your mouse and shoot away. Old school bullet hell shoot'em up. Enjoyable for five minutes, then it gets boring. I like the idea of the game, but the music thing is not developed well enough, and the game disappoints. Too bad.
I remember the game for its great story and graphics, but it's not really worth playing it, unless you like extremely frustrating gameplay. When you control the hero, you are constantly in some sort of danger, you can get shot by the hostile aliens or fall off a cliff. The danger comes unexpected, and you will probably die four or five times before you can survive the challenge. It's all trial and error with no living chance, unless you have a sixth sense for surviving random attacks. Forget about this game. It's not a classic.
This old version of I76 really puts your patience to the test. The game crashes at any second you could think of, When you think you've just completed a mission, The game quits and you can start all over again. GOG should definetely make some sort of patch that solves the many glitches and errors in this game. If you're thinking about buying this, be prepared for a lot of trouble. The game itself is fantastic, an amazing story with a lot of fun missions. It's extremely action packed, after a few missions you will find yourself driving top speed down a dirt road, blasting the creepers to pieces. The 70s styled cars are a plus as well. Graphics are seriously dated, but the soundtrack is one of the best game themes ever. Once again, a great game, but there should be some patch to fix all the errors.
