I just recently played this game for the first time thanks to GOG. and from a modern perspective I have to say that this game not only holds up, but is still better then most action rpgs made today. I had so much fun with this game. My only complaint is that the story can be difficult to follow and the hints for the clues can be obtuse at times. all in all Both games are ridiculously engaging.
This game does not exactly have the best reputation. Its level design can be a bit wonky, the weapons are plentiful to the point where the majority of them will never be used and the enemies tend to behave strangely. However, this game is still IMMENSELY fun, I remember getting a kick out of how ridiculous it was. Its tongue in cheek violence in a genre I like to refer to as bullet porn. Even though the ending is a complete let down I still have the urge to pick it up for the sheer fun this game overs. Its not perfect, but monolith knows how to make mindless entertainment.
Everything freespace 1 did this Freespace 2 does better. It really made you feel like you were apart of an epic space battle, especially when your a small little ship flying in between two GIGANTIC Behemoths firing off HUGE laser beams that can incinerate you if you get a little too close. Needless to say its simply exhilarating and I heavily recommend it. The only flaw I can think of is that the map/mission editor is convoluted but I was never good with those anyway.
I remember when I first picked this game up. I never heard of it or knew what to expect, but I was immediately wowed. Before it I was a big wing commander fan, but this raised the bar so fricken high that nearly forgot wing commander existed. I still dream of doing bombing runs and panicking with the shield controls and getting that same thrill. I can't recommend it enough.
