Hardspace: Shipbreaker

Flawed masterpiece

I love the basic premise of the game: methodically dismantling space ships to pay off your debt to the evil corporation. As you progress in the game, you will encounter new dangers and larger, more profitable ships. This would be a perfect game to muck about while floating in space, but it has two big faults. The bigger fault is unskippable conversations you don't even get to participate in. Worse still, if you reload the game, you have to listen the conversation again. Useful monologues are the foreman's instructions on dismantling dangerous systems. The rest is useless fluff. The smaller fault is the buggy laser cutter. It cuts the intended yellow connectors just fine, but dismantling walls to pull out large items or extract doors is hit and miss, sometimes it works, sometimes you need to cut the wall into many small pieces before you can get rid of it. The laser is also inconsistent, sometimes you can separate aluminium wall piece from aluminium spar. Other times the aluminium spar gets vaporised and you incur a loss.
