I hate this game. Timed puzzles, timed bossfights, timed wave fights that all restart form the beginning when you fail. Sure you can turn down the difficulty, but I will play this game the way the developers intended. I don't mind when a game is difficult, but I do mind when it takes a long time to get back to where I failed. Don't buy it unless you have a lot of spare time and patience.
I saw a lot of reviews saying it is an amazing game with mods, they are incorrect. Gentlemen of Fortune is is an extremely frustrating mess with a ton of "realism" added. "Ship speeds, lowed for more realistic speeds." It takes ages to sail anywhere and you have to micromanage food, drink and pay for your crew. It's possible to turn off some of this in the options menu, but not the sailing speed apparently. This is only for people who value realism over making an enjoyable game. I'm only giving this two stars because it might be a better experience without mods, maby I will try that someday.
The first thing the game establishes is that Brian has no qualms about putting his life in extreme danger for no good reason. And given how he reacts to certain events he might be psychotic. The story is engaging enough, but a bit contrived and silly at times. The puzzles are sometimes okei, and other times complete moon logic. Often it's easy overlook items because many of them are tiny or well hidden, this makes it easy to get stuck on a puzzles. Always check containers twice, and check them again later. You might find something new. Don't make this your first adventure game, but it's worth a playthrough if you are a fan of the genre.
Most of the game is walking from cell to cell to try and get information out from a group of five patients. The rest is very simple puzzles and exploration. Use a guide for the patient parts to save yourself some time, there is no satisfaction in playing recordings for them to try and find the right ones. Try it if you run out of other mystery games. Slight ending spoiler: Don't expect a clear resolution to the story, several things are never explained. And what happens afterwards is entirely unclear.
Great game, but the combat is possibly even worse than in Gothic. Even in 1v1 the lockon will often loose its target and you will suddenly turn the wrong direction. If there is more than one enemy its a total crapshoot with the lockon switching at random between targets. Don't expect combat to be fun until after you have become overpowered. And remember you can save while in combat, no shame savescumming in this game.
This game is a lot like Privateer, witch apparantly is not what a lot of fans of the first rebel galaxy wanted. A lot of the negative reviews are more for what they they wanted and not for what the game actually is. This is a first person dog fighting and trading game. I didn't like the first rebel galaxy, but really like this one. If you are playing with a mose and keybord i recomend using the ingame chasing and aim assist, the game is hard enough without crippeling yourself. The only real negativ thing I have to say about the game is the story. Important characters are introduced so late in the plot that we bearly get to know them. That we have a revenge mission right of the start is not particularly compelling either when we don't know anything about the guy we are avenging. I would recommend that if they make more games like this that they do the story more like Privateer did and have the story kick off when we take on a job that we maybe shouldn't have.
