This game is simple but complex at the same time, you can do anything you want, direct your colonists to survive and more. For example you could play a lone cannibal who ambushes people on the road and eats them making clothing out of human skin, or you can play a sweet little colony of people who get along and are productive members of society. You could produce and sell drugs if you want, pretty much anything you can imagine. You can even find and install cybernetic implants into your colonists or kidnap people who have fancy implants and rob them of their fancy implants. The royalty DLC adds a bunch of extra fun, appoint a leader of your colony and either work for or against a mighty intergalactic empire who gift you with psychic enhancement devices so no one can question your rulers power! This game is worth every penny, it's the perfect example of amazing content without needy fancy graphics.
